Canon 5D Depth Of Field Predictor

Can anyone tell me how the Depth of Field Predictor works? I know that whatever the Depth of Field Predictor shows, incl exposure, that is what the sensor is getting. In my case it shows the exposure as much lower than I see through the viewfinder. Why the difference? I use an L lens set to 135mm.
I'm not afraid of underexposure, it can be easily corrected, but I want to get the sharpness as good as possible. Am told whenever I edit, I destroy detail, so want to minimise that.

I assume you are talking about the Preview button for the aperture.
The reason your viewfinder gets darker is just that you get less light in.
It is of course impossible to have this dark view as the normal view so you normally always see view at full aperture,
However the exposure is of course always calculated at the real aperture you get when you shoot your image. So it has nothing to do with underexposure when you push the preview.
It is only used to see how the real image looks at your selected aperture.
Especially with a tele what you see in the viewfinder may be much different than what you get if you are using a small aperture.
Use it to see how you can control blurred backgrounds for portraits or closeups of flowers etc.

Also, please note that the beautiful bokeh/blurred background you might see sometimes can be due to the matte focusing screen, visible only in the viewfinder, and might not be in the actual shoot you take, use live view, if available, or take a shoot and zoom in on camera's display to see.
