WANTED: test images from Soligor 0.19X / iPIX lens
Posted: 29 Jun 2009 at 8:58 GMT
morning all,

I picked up a new iPIX / Soligor 0.19X fish eye converter as per this thread: www.panoguide.com/forums/qna/5960/ and want to use it as a lightweight travelling set-up with my NN3 & walking monopod. Question is, which camera to use: choice at moment is either Canon Powershot G9 / G10 or Nikon P6000. Has anyone got a set of test images with this lens converter / camera set up? Want 3 or 4 round, shot in RAW.

Any other camera recommendations / suggestions? Must have manual program, ISO, white balance, RAW, remote shooting (either IR or cable, etc), etc. The Canon is ahead at the moment as with the Powershot range I can use the live view release with PS Breeze for my mast photography – although only captures in compressed JPEG, not RAW, which is annoying. Although, on the downside of the G9, I’ve read about dust getting on the sensor & inside of the lens as the zoom mechanism sucks contaminated air in.

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers
Stu

Hi Stu,

I have one of these lenses and just for sport I have ordered the adapter rings required to fit it up to my Lumix LX3. Hopefully I should have these within the week and can give it a go for you.

I have mounted it to my Sony Mavica CD500 and also one of my old Nikon Coolpix 5000's.

It will be interesting to see what can be achieved with the Panasonic.

The lens fits perfectly on my Nikon D50 with 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G, I can zoom to full circular, portrait cropped circular, diagonal cropped circular formats but the combo is to long to work with my NN3.

It hoped to be able to use it on my Panasonic DMC-FZ10 but failed, it probably does not work on the whole FZ series.

I use it on my Fuji e550 and e900. On those cameras, it fits both my NN3 and my SPH2s that I have on my monopod.

If you want to see the end results after a bit of post --

It's a little soft on my rig. The LX3 should do a much better job. And it should be fit the NN3.

Hey Smooth -- do you have a remote shutter release for your LX3?

There is no wireless remote or wired for that matter for the LX3 but you can get aftermarket cable release adapters. Or if it's not up a pole out of reach you can use the self timer function.

Hi Smooth,

Have you received the adapter ring for your Lumix LX3 yet? If so, have you tried the Soligor lens on it yet?

cheers

Hi Smooth, I agree it's not a great lens but with some work you can squeeze an ok small pano out of it.

Here's an unfinished one -- I like the water.

Hi Ken,

Although the lens is not great I believe the combination with the Panasonic LX3 makes it even worse. I'm not sure if its because of the 24mm lens or the adapters required that effect the quality but I get better results with the Nikon FC-E8 on the Panasonic than the Soligor fisheye.

Neither are much chop really when your use to DSLR's etc.

You pano is fine for what it is.

I just was expecting better from the LX3 Soligor combination! I doubt I will ever use it again.

That's a disappointing result you got. I was looking forward to the time when I get a higher resolution compact hoping that I could get better (sharper) images.

But if you can't get good images from an LX3 -- which is about the best of the best I understand -- then there isn't much hope for improvement.

And I try to avoid looking at panos from real cameras and lenses -- it's too depressing when I look at my crap.
