Using D70's. Should I upgrade??
Posted: 15 Jun 2009 at 7:05 GMT
I've been happily using my D70 and 8mm fisheye for a few years. I am just wondering if an upgrade to say a D90 will produce much improved/sharper images?? Or will the end result be negligible?

Thanks for all positive input.

Upgrade your lens to a Nikon 10.5 mm before you upgrade your camera. I have one of the F3.5 8MM sigma lenses and find that it is just not quite as sharp as the Nikon. You will be adding two shots around, one Zenith and one Nadar (well two Nadars so you can remove the tripod).

I agree with DennisS. The Nikon 10.5mm is sharper. I have created Spherical Panoramas with a Nikon D70 and a Nikon 10.5mm and they looked quite good. I now have a D300 but this was for other reasons. Maximize current panoramics by shooting in RAW then create high quality TIFF's from those. Stitch your TIFF's to create the panoramics.

Thanks, but I already have my methodology down pat and I am using a Nikkor 8mm not the Sigma. My quality is already excellent with the D70. I am after input on whether a D90 camera upgrade will improve on this. I was hoping someone might have already done this upgrade and could comment from experience.

It would be for the wider bracketing range (although you would want the D300 for this), live view, higher ISO levels, faster frame rate and HD movie features I would think. It really depends on what you use your camera for. Of course you would gain some resolution also.

If you're getting excellent quality you may not get really visible improvement or change.

The major differences between the D70 and D90 are 6MP vs 12.3MP and a CCD vs CMOS sensor

You'll get twice the resolution and CMOS sensors resist blooming, like where the light from a bright window is next to the dark window frame. A common situation for shooting indoor virtual images.

At the time when I was choosing between the similarly priced Canon XTi and Nikon D80, both with 10MP sensors, I went with the Canon because of the CMOS sensor.

Since you have a working setup, I'd wait a while for the price of the D90 to come down a little

I'm looking forward to seeing some work from your Nikkor 8mm online wink

Thank-you Smooth and Doug for your advice. The CMOS sensor and 12MP are the 2 features that may convince me to purchase. I notice prices are already dropping. So I will keep my eye out for a "bargain". smile
