can please anyone tell me if 8mm sigma f/3.5 is FF or not ? if it is FF then is that lens better than Nikkor 16mm FE ?
Awaiting your kind prompt reply

The Tokina 10-17mm fisheye is perfect for that camera after you have the lens shaved.

I assume you looking for a spherical 380x180 panorama? Then a 16mm fisheye is the most effective on the D700. With 6 pictures around, one Zenit and one Nadir you get 12000px x 6000px. The Sigma is a FF, but its a circular fisheye lens on the D700. You will get a 380x180 with 6000px x 3000px out of it. In the end it all depends what you want to achieve.

Shave the 10.5 lens you already have. You cannot beat Nikon glass on a Nikon camera.

The best lens for your camera is the Nikkor 16mm Fullframe Fisheye.
The Sigma 8mm is NOT a fullframe fisheye it is a circular fisheye and you will waste a lot of pixels.

I think the best lens is the shaved tokina 10-17 at 12mm.

Another lens to consider would be the Sigma 15mm f/2.8 full frame FE. I've been happy with mine on the D700.

was thinking to go for either 8mm f3.5 if its fullframe or 16mm nikkor fisheye if that gives 6+Z with 15degree minus tilt like 300+10.5 system with nn3.
can anyone guide ?
preference would be always nikkor to got with nikon but if the full 360x180 can be cover by 7 shots 6+1(top).

atomicmak A Sigma 8mm f/3.5 on a Full Frame camera will give you almost full coverage with 3 shots if you tilt it up 5-7°
The "tilt" will leave a small "hole" at the nadir, on top of the rotator hub.
So if you'll bee shooting in situations where the fewest number of shots are needed, because of moving people, cars, etc, you may want to consider it
And you don't have to shave the hood, it slips off.

Mak,
As I have already stated. The Sigma 8mm is a circular fisheye lens and NOT fullframe.
The Nikkor 16mm Fullframe Fisheye will allow you to shoot 6x around with -15 degree tilt, 1x zenith +65 up to +90 and a hand held nadir.
It is a good workflow.

Smooth I think he got it.
But not every scene allows for 6 shots around with nothing moving.
Recently I shot a restaurant dining room that was open and had customers seated and wait staff moving around.
Six areas with 25% overlap would have been a nightmare. Those moving people would even be worse with bracketing for HDR or Enfuse.
And not all VR Photgraphers think 12,000x6,000 pixel Equirectangular Projections are neccesary to do good work.
5000x2500 pixels, or 12 million pixels is plenty to use on Web viewed tours
But rest assured, we all got your point...both times.

If he "GOT IT" Doug then he would not have asked the following after my first post.....

sorry dough and smooth but asking again was to clarify my need.
am having d300 and 10.5 and work around is like 6+1top currently with bracketing and get nice 10000x5000 output i can use in big kiosk's
now i wanted such large file and i read that using some lenses wont work full frame on that d700FX body.
so need to make sure that when i buy a good lens and spend i should get large file as well not that 5.1MP cropped for non full frame lens.
and infact i was comparing with esiting nice result giving 10.5 so i am ready to spend good amount but dont want to compromise on quality for lens.
thats the only reason to post here for lens buying help.

Mak,
The Nikkor 16mm Fullframe Fisheye is a FX style lens designed for SLR 36x24mm focal plane full size sensor cameras. It will work the same as the 10.5mm on a DX small sensor camera.
Just the same the Sigma 8mm Circular Fisheye was designed for use on a full size SLR focal plane or 36x24mm full size sensor. It produces a round circular image just like the FC-E8 and FC-E9 on an old Coolpix. It is a 180 degree FOV. But when this lens is fitted up to a DX small sensor camera you get cropped edges "drum" style image.
The other lenses mentioned are DX designed lenses, meaning these were designed for the small sensor right at the time of manufacture. To use these on a full size 36x24mm sensor camera like the D700 you need to shave the lens hood (sunshade) off or it interferes with the view. For this the Tokina 10-17mm Zoom Fisheye is the clear winner. Even over the Nikkor DX 10.5mm Fisheye. The Tokina can be used like a "drum" image at 10mm and you can complete a 360x180 view in as little as 3 shots or you can use it as a fullframe fisheye lens in the higher range.
I believe if you fit a Nikkor 10.5mm fisheye onto the D700 it will sense it is a DX lens and limit your camera to 5.1MP but I'm told you can manually override this setting and make it perform as a FX lens (again only useful if the lens has the hood shaved).
Maybe a D700/D3/D3x owner will clear this up?
Upshot: The Nikkor 16mm Fisheye was designed for a fullframe 36x24mm camera in the factory so is perfectly suited to the D700.
