Sony A900 v. Canon 5D MkII

Hi Guys,

I am considering going full frame, and I am torn between the Sony A900 and the Canon 5D MkII. Has anyone any particular views on these cameras? I mostly take panos and wide angle shots.

The Canon has much less noise at high ISO, but I almost never go beyond ISO 800, of course if my system had low noise I might.

The Sony seems to have better bracketting capabilities, and the built-in sensor stabilisation means I can have the benefits with cheaper lenses.

In UK the Sony has a very clear price advantage at the moment, although that might change as Sony is about to up its prices.

I much appreciate the quality of views expressed in panoguide, any relevant comments?

Cheers,

Pete

If it was me, I'd go with the Canon in a heartbeat. It's about $300USD cheaper than the Sony at B&H Photo $2699-$2999 but just for the wide choice of glass offered by Canon would be the clincher for me.. If you are going to invest that much in a camera you surely don't want to skimp on glass!

I'm a fan of Sony cameras. I used an old Mavica FD81 (one with a floppy disk to record) for 5 years doing my real estate photos. They had great color.

But when I bought a dSLR, I went for broad compatibility and support and bought a Canon XTi/400D. The runner up was a Nikon D80. I did look hard at the A100 because the price was $200 less than either of the similar Nikon or Canon, though

Nikon & Canon just have more factory lenses, more third party lenses and more people using them who can help in forums like this one.

Good luck

I would go for the rule
"by the camera for the lens you want"

So consider what lenses do you want to use ?
Availabe for the camera in mind ?

I don“t know if all pamoramic lenses are available for the Sony.
But for me a FF would certainly be at the best with a 10mm fisheye - great for panos.
Tokina ATX 107 or equiv.
Also a 8mm - 3 shots panos would be considerable.

Only my 2 cents smile

edit:
I would bet that Canon has pretty much of experience in CMOS FF sensors too.
In the Canon-Professional-is better then the 1 DS xx - best sensor they ever made.Sensor speaking though.

Ciao
