Hi Guys,
I have a older manfrotto 190DB tripod along with a pan and tilt head (I can't remember what the model no was).
I wanted to know if you guys think if the tripod and head are suitable for the NN5 and D2x combo along with a 17-55 lens or a 70-200 or will the weight be too much?
What tripods is everyone using here?
Thanks for the reponses I'll be lookig forward to reading them

Berry, I can't comment on the 190DB since I never owned one. I have the Manfrotto 055XPROB and NN3 MKII for my Canon 5D and Sigma 8mm 3.5 and am very happy with all. If I wanted to use the 70-200 lens, I would probably buy the NN5 to handle it.

Thanks for the reply Bob.
No worries. I'm just curious as to the weight of everythign combined I guess I'll have to check it myself Do you guys mount the pano head directly onto the tripod itself or do you guys mount it onto a head e.g 3 way pant and tilt or a low profile side trigger head etc.
Thanks
Berry

I have the manfrotto 190 and it's a bit too light-weight/small to handle your combination. Actually I wasn't all that happy using it with the NN3/D80 let alone the NN5L/D300.
I'd recommend going the next size up like the manfrotto 055 series, gitzo 320 series, etc. (ie. tripods with an upper leg diameter of 25mm or more)
For the past 2 years I've been using a Benro C257 carbon fiber tripod and it has been trouble free. It easily supports my NN5L/D700 and my film cameras (Fotoman 617, Deardorff 5x7). I mount everything on a Acratech ballhead.

Hello,
I have Manfrotto 190XDB tripod with Manfrotto 804RC2 head which has three handles panning, tilting and roll.
And I have NN5L, right now I have put NN5L on top of the Manfrotto head(804RC2). This is making my tripod taking too much of space in Nadir shot and needing more time to patch up the tripod having unnecessary handles.
So even I would like to know weather we could remove the head(804RC) and attach pano head(NN5L)directly to tripod.
This will give a Nadir image having less tripod area and less patching work or a smaller mirror image. Any comments are welcome.

I am using 303sph, d300, Nikkor 10.5mm and 18-135mm on a Manfrotto 055XPROB but I tested this combination on the cheapest skinny tripod (even Google doesn't list that brand) and it didn't fall. OK there is no way that I can trust that skinny tripod but like what I said it didn't fall.

Hi Berry, The selection of a tripod is really dependent on your needs and budget. Studio work versus hiking, $200 verses $1000. Opting for the NN5 tells me you like practical gear at a practical price. So the when buying a tripod not sure you would lean towards the $29.95 Walmart tripod or super light weight titanium Gitzo's. Features you need to look for in a tripod would be: * removable head so you can select a good ball head like the Manfrotto 3265 vertical hand grip. * no hand crank models (knobs to raise the neck up and down are preferred IMO). * you want independent leg movement (for uneven surfaces). * Good sturdy neck without wobble during rotating. I never saw a good Promaster.
I have the same camera and lens and use it on a Manfrotto 3301BN. Features I like include: * lightweight * twist knobs to retract legs as opposed to twist rings * legs move independent of each other (good for uneven surfaces) * sturdy
We also have a thread in our forum on what tripods folks are using with their Nodal Ninjas: nodalninja.com/forum/index.php?topic=61.0
Good luck Bill

Sorry for the late reply wasn't at home the weekend was out shooting weddings in the hot sydney weather. hmm looks like i'll most likely need to get another set of tripod legs then in that case. I do have a 322RC2 low profile ball grip head, which I currently have mounted on my monopod and I use that for catwalk photos. I guess I can use that head instead of my pan and tilt *ponders*
Still need to get a set of tripod legs though hmm.
Thanks for the link Bill I'll have a read of it.
