Stitch Speed Test on different machines

Hello,
Following Bill Bailey's question for tips on a new PC or Mac I got curious in the actual difference in speed on OS's and Hardware setups.
I've placed a sample project online so you can test it on your machine and post the results here.
www.c360.nl/test/test.zip (24 MB)
In the zip file you'll find 6 images (please use only for testing) and a PTGui project file. Render it (using enblend) without changing the settings, this to compare the speed results, not the panorama

downloaded in 6 seconds, changed the output directory settings, used Pablo's non SSE enblend
4 minutes 1 second (from which 2 minutes 2 seconds enblend)
AMD Sempron 2200+ 1.5 GHz 1 GB RAM (SDRam maybe 266...400 MHz don't know right now) Win XP Home Edition SP2 PTGui Pro 8.0 beta 6
I guess this might help Bill to feel better with no new purchase

Hi Guys,
I tested this on two systems,
Acer Aspire 5710 Notebook, (bought 10 months ago) CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo, T5500 @1.66GHz RAM: 2GB Vista
Self assembled desktop, (about 3 years old). CPU: AMD Athlon 64, 3800+, 2.4GHz RAM: 2GB XP
I tested it twice on each system.
.......................Acer 1....Acer2......AMD 1...AMD 2 Total time ..........96s......105s.......86s.......96s Enblend only......53s.......53s........38s.......37s
I have no idea why the second time it took about 10 secs longer, same with both systems.

Hi Henri,
An afterthought, Considering that your 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo CPU is 40% faster than mine I would have expected you to do better than being about 20% faster. I would have expected much better from an Acer with the 2.33GHz CPU
Perhaps using the MacBook Pro with MaxOSX is a bit like driving a Trabant

Pete Testing Enblend on Mac/Pc is very difficult. Enblend versions differs in speed from not just version to version but also between each developer. As they are compiled by different people who do not always talk together you can experience speed differences of 50% from the same basic version.
Also you do not say what PTGui version you used. The new 8.0 beta is very different in speed on different versions.
Here is a test on my MacBook Pro (first edition) 2,16 Intel Core Duo 2 GB Ram Harddisc 7.200 RPM
PTGui 8.0 beta6 PTgui blender 1.07 Enblend3.1- 30.12.07 1.04 Enblend 3.1-18.1.08 1.45
PTGui 7.8 PTGui blender 1.08 Enblend3.1-30.12.07 1.04 Enbl 3.1-18.1.08 1.42
In this case the difference between 7.8 and 8.0 is none but if you use larger images and output PTGui8.0 will be faster up to 10000x5000. Than it will become much slower suddenly. This might be changed it is still beta.
This was the speed with a test output 9000x4500 from 8images Canon5D PTgui 8 beta6 3.25 PTGui 7.8 7.20
Remember that you also have to specify the Disk speed to be able to compare. A 7200 may give you 20% faster than a standard laptop 5400 Thats why I got mine exchanged.

Hi,
I have repeated my tests using Henri's pano. This time I used, PTGui 8.0 beta6 enblend dated 26/02/08 from the Enblend-Enfuse package. I don't know the version number.
................Acer..........AMD Warp.........37s...........66s Blend........56s...........42s Total........93s..........108s
I repeated the tests several times, and this time the results were much more consistent, within ±2s.
Remember that you also have to specify the Disk speed to be able to compare. .... And the type of disk, and the amount of memory, and the speed of the memory, and what programs were running in the background etc. etc. etc.
My computers are the technical equivalent of Bag Ladies. They have SATA & IDE disks and any old junk I can find inside and hanging outside. Comparing a Mac with my systems is like racing an Olympic sprinter against a Bag Lady.
However I have found these preliminary results interesting. I had always assumed that expensive Macs were much superior to PCs in performance. Perhaps they are not.
.... Now I shall wait for the usual hate mail, this time from the Mac Militia.

Don't worry, that useless anyway, Macs are better (just kidding).
I just ran the test using PTGuis stitcher and that took 2'.06"
I'm running it from a 5400 RPM almost full HD. Works for me anyway!

Hey Henri, Great barometer even with all the varibles at play. It's interesting to see who can process the file the quickest. My results: Windows XP,Intel Core 2 Quad 2.40 GHz 4 GB RAM. Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS. PTGUI Beta 8 After running this test my whole pc has slowed (sweating completing this post)and needs a reboot. Time to process full 11933x7389 tif file Warp = 1 min 45 secs Enblend = 9 min 10 sec Total time = 10 minutes 55 sec
keep the tests coming.....
cheers Bill

How are you guys getting the timing stats? Are you just looking at your watch or is there some sort of time logging feature in PTGui?

Hi Guys,
I have tried the test using Henri's 5,000x2,500 pano on my earlier notebook, using the same, PTGui 8.0 beta6 enblend dated 26/02/08 from the Enblend-Enfuse package. I don't know the version number.
................NEC Versa AX Warp.........12m 42s Blend.........15m 20s Total..........28m 02s
It has AMD K6 458MHz CPU and 192MB RAM I think the hard disk does about 60 RPM
I used this 18 months ago on my first Chinese temple panos from Penang. The images were taken with the standard 350D lens at 18mm so there were about 36 images to stitch. I'd go down the beach for a beer and it still wouldn't be finished when I rolled back.
The latest Macs might be able to beat that

Intel Quad Core Q6600 (2.4ghz) with 8gb ram running Windows Vista Ultimate x64 250gb sata drive w/16mb cache 7200rpm
PT Gui Pro v 8.0beta 6 (64bit edition) w/ Enblend plugin
files were in a folder on the desktop I don't have a temp file specified, so it's probably using the default windows temp on the same drive
I had my virus scanner running and firefox open to the panoguide post.

I used the timer on my iPhone, clicked start at the same time I hit the "create panorama" button in PTGui.
