Quick help in a pinch!

Hey guys,
Have a paid gig I'm doing through another firm that doesn't shoot full 360 panos. They usually do single row with 17 or 18 mm. I have a Sigma 8mm and would rather not purchase another lens in the pinch.
Can I use the Sigma and then just crop the bottom and top to conform to what the single row might represent? Will it look appropriate?
I have an older setup I might use that is single row based, but with a lower resoltion camera. I may go that route considering it is a rather long car hike for this one and don't want to have to go back 2X.
Thanks

jimmyd Use your Sigma 8mm and just crop the top & bottom
Ask them for a specification of what size they want, create an Equirectangular Projection with the same width and just crop to the same height.
I'd ask for a sample from them, to see what they're used to working with
By using your prefered equipment and cropping, you'll get a better product.

jimmyd The Banners on the top of Panoguide.com are mostly "cropped equirectangular projections"

Thanks guys, I tested a sample 360 tour and then cropped in PS and it came out fine. I was just worried that the orientation would be off if I limited the fov.
I got another problem now!! My Tripod was stolen out of my car yesterday. Don't ask! It was a older model Monfratto with the 3 leveling arms, etc. To be honest it isn't the greatest for 360x180 because the arms show up in the frame using my Sigma 8mm even with a 10 degree tilt to cover the zenith.
Can any of you recommend a "reasonably" priced tripod that I could purchase here on the fly that would suit the 360x180 needs better. Budget is tight right now, but clearly a solid tripod is a must. Let me know also if your recommendations require a leveler for appropriate results. I will spend what I have to spend but would be very interested in less expensive, but altogether solid tripod.
My gear is 10d, nn3, sigma 3.5 8mm.
Thanks again guys...

The Manfrotto 755B is solid. It has a built-in levelling head (50mm ball - giving +/- 20 degrees of pitch adjustment). See tinyurl.com/6xp6b2 . It's very quick to set the level. Now replaced by a similar model: 755XB. Around $260 - is that "reasonable"? Or you could get the lighter 190XPROB for $160 if you are prepared to level by adjusting the legs or adding a levelling device.

Jimmy, I have one of these that I don't use anymore (have Gitzo CF now). Let me know if you are interested in buying a used one in excellent condition. Mine has pads on the legs as well.

di19026,
Is it the 755b that you have? I am interested. What is your asking price?
Thanks John for the recommendation.

Follow up question...
Won't cropping the top and bottom through off the aspect ratio? In short, in the viewer will my pano have an undesired whirl effect, because it is no longer 2:1?

jimmyd Thats why I suggested you ask them for image size specs.
A Cylindical Projection isn't a 2:1 ratio. Most I've paid attention to were 4:1, but you should check with you customer

The only thing they told me was their finished pano height would be 700. Clearly not enough info. I'll shoot with my old setup to be safe.

Hey John,
So the 755b's center column levelling head has enough play to properly level the gear without adding an additional leveling head?
Also, I found the 190XPROB paired with the 486RC2 leveling ball for $200. Free shipping. Given the options, which route would you take?
