I've wondered about the hot shoe gps's for years...
Do they get their power from the hot shoe?
If so, they're not on until you take a picture, and a gps needs a few moments to get a lock on the satellites
So after you take a few pictures and turn your camera off, you'll have to relocate the sats when you turn it on.
I use a Garmin handheld, tethered via USB to my Canon 40D (to the WFT-E3A wifi pack really). That encodes the geodata into the EXIF on the fly.
But, if I don't want to tether the gps to the camera, I can just walk around shooting, and my gps is clipped to my pack, then when I get home, I load up the pictures & the gps track data and synch up the shots with an app called RoboGeo, which then writes the info into the EXIF.
