450D V 40D? to buy or not to buy.

As the 40D body is now only £500 after cash back... Thinking about buying... My question is... what advantages does the 40d have over the 450d to help with taking panos? And does anyone have any samples comparing them both? We currently use peleng 8mm's. Does the 450D's extra 2m pixels have an advantage over the 40d? or does the 40D produce 'better quality' pixels that can be enlarged? Stick with the 450D or 'upgrade' to 40D...
Oh and does the 40d fit on the NN3?
Cheers all.. think this could be an interesting discussion

I haven't seen a full review of the 450D, but the specs show its buffer will only take 6 RAW frames as compared to 17 on the 40D. I can take 8 bracketed RAW shots (that's 8x3) without any delays using the Sandisk Extreme III card. The 40D also has 3 user settings positions on the mode knob. You can assign all your camera settings for shooting a panorama to one position and set them up instantly. No danger of forgetting to set bracketing or burst mode or live view or whatever you want to use. I like that a lot.

Hi,
If I would be in your dilemma I would consider very much this feature of 40D about the shutter: 100,000 exposure durability

I sell Canon cameras, and have been waiting for the 450 (XSi) since PMA in February. Our price here on a little island is $899 US for the 450 body. The 40D is $1,329 for the body only, but we have an "instant" rebate of $200.00.
If my math is right --- $900 <vs> $1,129. Prices will vary around the planet, of course. But this might give you some "thoughts".
While I LOVE the Canon 450 (XSi) with the 12MP --- I can't ignore the significant upgrade to a 40D for just $250 US !!
- Magnesium Alloy body. Very tight. More weather resistant. - 6.5 framers per second <vs> 3.5 fps for XSi - Bigger Sensor - Higher ISO (low light situations) - Three (3) Custom Setting modes on left mode dial - Easier to clean sensor
But --- it is a heavier camera, if weight is an issue. It is for me. I hope this helps, if ever so slightly.

Rudders Unless you need a camera now or soon, I'd wait.
What will get me to seriously look at my next camera for VR Photography is Live View with a Tilt Out/Swivel Viewer.
I've been using a Nikon Coolpix 5400 and 8700 and the tilt & swivel viewer makes it soooooo easy to shoot from a tripod when the camera is about 3 feet 6 inches from the ground. No crouching down, and if tou have to duck down to thay out of mirror refection, you can just tilt & swivel the view screen, to where ever you are.
Panasonic's Lumix dSLR has a tilt & swivel view screen now and I'll bet Canon & Nikon aren't far behind.

Been using canon DSLR's now for past 2-3 yrs so used to not having any live view.. and nver had any probs setting the camera up correctly 1st time.. both 40d and 450d have live view.. The reason I was considering the 40d as its due to be replaced this year and so the body is now less than £500 after canon cash back, The 450d body is still £450... but the 450d has an extra 2mp with most of the features of the 40d...

Rudders ....
The 40D is coming down in price, yes. It will be replaced late in the year. The next BIG announcement by Canon will be the long-awaited replacement, and very muchly needed ---5D Two .
Canon has not named it nor priced it yet, of course. The full-frame 5D Two (as we call it) will finally get the Digic Two processor and be true 14-bit A/D.
I have fallen in love with Canon's Remote Capture software, since it is free. I enjoy a "tethered" laptop to my camera --- and enjoy the flexibility it gives me. Several here turned me on to Breeze Sys --- they have incredible software to control the camera -- you can even build exposure bracketing scripts and Focus Lock .... along with total control of your Canon camera.
So if you find you want to see the picture before you take it --- and be able to make camera adjustments with the camera in a difficult situation --- this might be a nice solution.
Best to all, Steve

tested the 40d today... The images are clearly better quality than the 450d. Sharper, less noise.. even though 2mp less.. no contest.. new toy coming after bank holiday! I ll post a few frames later.

No idea how you tested and with what software but at dpreview.com there is a review about the 450D. It needs good lenses to get the best results. Have Fun

I tested them both with my current lenses... canon 18-55, sigma 18-200, peleng 8mm. Im sure the 450d can be better but with my lenses the 40d was the winner. the sample pano.. (only dif is one was 160 exp & one, 200 exp. All frames untouched from cameras, and no set up time! just threw the cameras on the nn3 without any consideration for the npp.

Just saw the images. The 450D is just enlarging the peleng softness. With RAW on both camera's you could improve results. I still would go for the 450D (but I have one and a 5D+other Fishes) But hey, it's your party.. ) Have Fun!
