Adobe set to test new Flash Player

Adobe on Thursday is expected to launch a beta test program for the latest version of its Flash Player software.

Thanx, I just installed the beta.
Unfortunately the flash panos still have the 'sawtooth' pattern over the straight lines. I was hoping that that would be improved with a new version of the flash player..

That question was the first thing that came to my mind. As a Java programmer, I worry about that. That's the one advantage Java has over Flash -- no ziggies.

But I know it's only a matter of time before Flash is the absolute best for panos. It's Adobe after all...

Okee, I will have to take back what I typed earlier. It IS a big improvement. Only not for existing pano's made for flash-9. Go see here: krpano.com/flash10/ a flash-10 test by KRpano. You will have to uninstall your curent flash version with this download.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/current/u... uninstaller from Adobe, and install flash beta 10. It looks like a huge improvement!
It seems like we're gonna have lots of fun updating all tours we made so far in flash-9 sad

I've just downloaded and tried this and it seems good. However I do not know enough about the advantages and disadvantages of Flash as opposed to QT.

So far I have tried Java, PTViewer, the Immervision players, then QT, Deval and a few simple tries with Flash but can not decide the best way to stadardise my panos.

Can anyone clarify this for me so that I can re-create my panos using only one system.

Well I would not call this an enchancement:
From release notes
Large Bitmap Support — Flash Player 10 now provides the ability to manipulate large bitmaps up to 16,777,216 pixels (4096 by 4096) with a maximum length of 8191 pixels per side.

Before last version 9.0.115 we had no problem with large strips or equirectangular.
9.0.115 broke a lot of sites by introducing the max 8191 length.
However I can still show cubefaces up to around 6000x6000 if I have the Ram

Now they seems to have reduced that to 4096x4096
No Gigapixel with KRPano

Sorry Hans, I think, you're wrong this time.
These days I'm testing krpano a bit and therefore I'm in contact with the devoleper;
that's where I got some of the information from.

As far as I know, flash 9 largest bitmaps are limited to 2880x2880,
whereas with flash 10 this limit will now increase to 4096x4096 or 8192x1024.
So, this seems to be an improvement, indeed.
(BTW: with krpano the panos are internally divided to smaller pieces, anyway).

And yes, krpano does support gigapixel panos.
The krpano flash 10 - test No. 2 (krpano.com/flash10/) actually is a 300 meg pano, eg. From krpano website:
"Additionally to the "piecewise" loading the panorama image can be "multi-resolution".
Only the tiles of the "current"-resolution will be loaded.
So it will be possible to render gigantic panoramas without loading the whole panorama."

Klaus I have used 5920x5920 without problem with FPP.

Check the forum and you will find other tests around 6000x6000

This is just a matter of having memory enough as my first tests on my MacBook gave me 3600x3600 as max.

I do not know where you got the 2880 from. Never heard of that.

And BTW it i not 8191x1024 but 8191x1365

Hans, we still are talking about Flash 9 <-> Flash 10 differences ?
[ and not about, how elegant various flash pano-viewers can handle bitmap limits .. ]

I did a quick net-search (tinyurl.com/5ynomt) and found this eg.:
www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/image_api_02....
(Well, this is about flash 8, but I suppose, the limit is the same with flash 9)
It says:
"Note: The maximum dimensions of a bitmap in Flash Player is limited to 2880 pixels
in either direction (width or height)......
A bitmap that is 2880 x 2880 pixels, will use roughly 32MB of RAM."

Well, I'm neither a "flasher" nor a "coder"; I'm just dependent on information I get or can find.
Most of flash is still a mystery to me. Maybe I'm still going wrong ....

Actually there has been no official info from Adobe about the special 8191 length limit introduced with 9.0,115
Not until the release notes in flash 10.

Not even Denis did know about any limits and we had to do experiments to find out.
From the last page on the thread you can see that the cube face limit is 6602x6602
flashpanoramas.com/forum/showthread.php?t=745&highlight=size+limit&page=5

Of course you need a lot of Ram for that.

Here is a page I set up with a 6360 cube face panorama.
20000x10000
www.panoramas.dk/panorama/flash/flash-6360.html

Beware this is 20mb download and unless you have a fast connection it will take ages.
You also need at least 3gb Ram.
It has a max of 2.4gb memory usage as seen in my activity monitor.
As a Quicktime movie the same panorama uses only 1.2 gb and you can even see it with less.

However if you have enough Ram it pans very smooth. I tested it on my 23" 1920x1200 monitor and even autorotation pans much better than a much smaller QTVR.

This is a smaller version 4600x4600 - 10mb download
www.panoramas.dk/panorama/flash/flash-4600.html

It uses up to 1.5 GB in my Safari
I tested this on a PC I just set up.
An Aspire Athlon 2.2 gHz with just 1 gb ram and no real videocard. Just one of these emulated ones.
The first load only loaded 1 cubeface but after relaoding it loaded all.
However performance was not very good,

This computer did however without any problem load a QTVR version with the large 6360 cube faces.

I have also tested it in Firefox on Mac and Firefox can not load any of them.
This is no surprise to me though as Firefox/Mac has never been able to handle large files and QTVR has had problems in it the last 4 years.
