I'm having trouble with DevalVR

Increasingly DevalVR panoramas fail to open. Started about a month ago with 1 in 10 failures and frustratingly got worse till now it's about 1 in 4. And it doesn't seem to matter which browser I use, IE, Opera or Safari. Sometimes the panorama partially opens, low resolution, monochrome, then stalls. Ctrl-Alt-Del Task Manager reports, "... not responding". I have a reasonably powerful set-up. Dual Core PC 3GB RAM More than 100 MB free disk space Vista Home Premium (Yuk}
I post this here rather than at Fiero's site because many of us are DevalVR users, perhaps the largest group there is.
Ah, while I'm at it, unlike IE and Opera, Saffari fails to download the latest viewer from devalvr.com. (Not my main concern, but Fiero, if you see this, you might take note).

is this on your site, everyone else's site ?
i haven't delved that deep into deval vr, but is it for .mov files only or decoding of other stuff, movies with previews or without?
and lastly i'm not sure where or if there are settings somewhere for a cache or temp files with deval, you may look into that.

Michael, Everybody's' sites. And no matter whether I'm on-line or viewing one of my own .mov files with DevalVR viewer from my hard drive. There is no problem viewing .mov files through QT viewer. It even happens when I view panoramas I uploaded to my site 9 months ago and never had problems viewing till recently, so it has to be something wrong my PC/software. Mark PS - A little box pops up now and then stating, "could not find Macromedia Flash" even though I've installed it over and again, but what has that to do with DevalVR? Nothing I would have thought.

well it definitely sounds like an issue with your machine. i think most people offering deval vr on their sites are probably using fiero's autodetect script so that would explain why you get similar results on most sites as well as the flash detection pop-up.
i'm assuming that you've tried re-installing all the plugins, but maybe you need to un-install them all first, there might be a duplicate version of one of them on your machine or an old version of some plugin causing errors.
since there hasn't been much discussion in this thread, you might try contacting fiero directly or posting on his forum

Michael, You are right, I am using Fieros autodetect, the full screen option offered in Pano2QVR's Helpers. I should have mentioned, 'can't find Macromedia Flash' was popping up in browser windows, even in Google home page, without launching a DevalVR file. I uninstalled Adobe Flash, as it is now called it seems, and tried a DevalVR file. Same stalling. Installed latest Adobe Flash. At first I thought a cure had been effected but on the 6th launch of a DevalVR file I got this; a stall.
Only way out, the dreaded Ctrl-Alt-Del This is really getting me down. Ruining my hobby. That it's a local problem like Michael says seems obvious. I've scanned for nasties but McAffee detected nothing. Can anyone help? Mark

Hi Mark,
Another user reported this problem with Vista some time ago. I test the viewer in Vista32 and Vista64 and it works correctly, but I work with WindowsXP so only tested Vista sometimes. I will do an intensive test in Vista the next days and I will tell you what happens.
About detectvr.js file, you can test latest version if you have any problem www.devalvr.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=276 . I fixed a problem with the Flash version number in 27-Jan-2008, maybe you have an older version. The "bug" was in a function that I copied from Adobe's official website. I recommend you to use only one detectvr.js file in all your site, to do an easy update of the file if it exists any problem.
regards!

That is a very useful tip from Fiero, and for those like me, who are not familiar with HTML, maybe this explanation might be of use to someone out there. Instead of just using the detectVR HTML as its provided in the detectVR "package", there is one line in the HTML that requires modification. Currently, the HTML has a line that looks like this:
<SCRIPTtype="text/javascript" src="detectvr.js"></SCRIPT> Which is basically saying the detecvr.js file is located in the same folder as the HTML page and the rest of the project files. Therefore you require a copy of the detectvr.js file in each and every single folder of your website that is using the detectvr HTML and script. So, when Fiero releases updates, you would have to find them all to replace them - not exactly ideal! However, you can simply place a copy of the detectvr.js file in the root of your site, and change the HTML of your page to point to this location instead, like this
<SCRIPT type="text/javascript" src="http://www.yoursite.com/detectvr.js">
This way, all you have to do is replace this one file when newer versions become available. If you use the pano2QTVR template, you can change the code on that page, which means the template will have the new line, and any projects you produce with pano2qtvr will have this clever little tweak applied.

Using an absolute path is fine if you're online.
What happens if you're viewing your site locally from an offline computer? Try it...

Hi Rosauro, In my site I use a relative path to wok online and offline, something like this:
<SCRIPTtype="text/javascript" src="../../detectvr.js"></SCRIPT> regards!

Thanks for your responses but none of them helped.
I must admit that I, without proof, blamed it all on Vista on my new desktop PC.
But...
Then I went walkabouts for a day or two and took my 'old' Dell laptop with me. And lo and behold - same problem. Well it ain't Vista! My Dell laptop employs Windows XP.
I've spent a long time looking for a common factor. And can think of just two possibilities.
1. My ISP - Virgin Media/NTL (Been with them a year) On my desktop hardwired via a Modem to their cable. On my laptop via an unsecured wireless system I detected near the house where I was staying for the last couple of days.
2. Centrica Hosting. (Been with them for almost three years)
I've had no problems with either in the past. The current problem is only about a month old.
I am still stuck. Frustrated! Any suggestions? Don't let me hear, 'Get a life'

Mark,
As the problem is common to your two computers and nobody else has mentioned the issue at all. I would suggest it is a likely conflict perhaps between installed programs on both computers or security settings on both computers. I would be looking at anti virus, firewall and security apps for starters. Shut them done one by one and see if it makes any difference.
Make sure you have current ActiveX browser plug-in versions installed.
Is it the same with all browser flavours? You say the issue is about 1 month old. What have you installed in that last month that might cause a conflict?

Yes Smooth, what you say makes sense and what I said didn't because the problem occurs just as frequently off-line from HD as on-line. Same problem with all three browsers installed; IE, Opera, Saffari. I will look into the things you mention after my guests go home, in the meantime would you and anyone else test this by calling up the panorama of the Old Barge Inn over and over again to see if it stalls your browsers like it does mine: panoradiant.co.uk/lee-page/hertford-lee.htm Mark PS I have the same problem viewing other peoples stuff with DevalVR. No problems with QTVR or various Flash and Java viewers.

For days now I have been trying to overcome the problem displaying VRs with DevalVR in HTMLs generated by Pano2QTVR. The problem is that the display sometimes stalls, no matter whether browser IE, Opera or Saffari is used. To reiterate, viewing with QTVR or Flash presents no problem. Not knowing what elso to do, I purchased PC Tools Register Mechanics, and did it help? Not at all! Surely there must be someone out there with a solution. Very glum, Mark
