I was thinking of buying an electronic one, but came to the conclusion that its much cheaper to use a sculpture or pottery turntable like this one for $20.
tinyurl.com/43j4xz
I marked the side of the turntable into 36 increments, and cellotaped a paper pointer to the base that points up the numbers.
With my wireless remote, im able to take 36 shots as quick, if not quicker, than an electronic turntable, as I can stand next to the light-tent and turn the table to the next number after each shot. 30-45 seconds for 36 shots. Some turntables have concentric rings eminating from the centre so its easy to centre your object. I cut a white circle out of glossy photopaper to place on top of the turntable which gives nice shadows.

What other benefit does an electronic turntable offer that a manual one cant?

gus,
How did you arrive at 36 for the number of images? Does this provide a smooth animation?

Marco,
36 images will give you relatively smooth animation in framerate 7-8 frames/sec. If your object is large horizontally the movement can feel too fast. By increasing number of shots you can make the movement slower in same framerate.
Here www.ormar.info/klaas/klaas.html two upper ones made from 72 photos, three lower ones from 36.

electronically driven. i already have the 20 chf-pearl.de-turntable. 12cm-diameter with camera-adapter(2-nodalpoint-positions). the 20-stops are so soft and imprecise. the latter does not matter to me but you need a good feeling to sense them. markers help. clicking bearly hearable. ok, this manually driven one helps for one task but the continously electronically driven one for the other. coolpix p50 has continious shoot but: evr(electronic antishake) is only working in single mode...depending rotating speed result is blurr.
who can deliver electronic lightweight/small turntables? btw: i have another one-for displaying. check pearl.de. it rather a joke and turning 2.5 rpm 3.5 rpm- but i need between 1 to 2rpm for one task. a flexible one is needed where i can change speeds. thank you very much.

Ormar,
Impressive work! 72 is much smoother, especially while dragging. This gives me a starting point for a large ceramic jar project. But first I must work on the lighting.

Hi Michael,
Do you click on NAME of image as written there? This should open small window with swf.
If yes, and they still refuse to work, what is your setup?
On my PC tested with Firefox, Opera, Safari, IE and working same way with all. Maybe it's your popup blocker? What you use?

You can always use an Absolute base and just attach a wooden top. The Absolute base can easily handle a few hundred kgs. The Absolute base is full ball raced and has changeable detents.
