Building a triple rig?
Posted: 28 Mar 2008 at 15:36 GMT
Do you think I should even attempt to build a triple rig similar to the Agnos mRotatorR?

To buy the Agnos it's going to cost me over $1000 (650 euro)

I know the 3 cameras are at 120 degrees each on the circle.

I know that they're set at 60 degrees off horizontal (almost full portrait mode)

I know that the cameras are tilted up at 5 degrees (to get the zenith stiched easier)

I have a friend who can cut aluminum on a CNC type machine.

Do you think I should attempt to make one?

I would be putting up 3x Rebel XT w/Sigma 8mm fisheyes

For the triple trigger, Rebel XT's use 1/8 inch stereo jacks, so I can easily make a splitter (or solder 2 more wires to one)

Any ideas, feedback, suggestions?

Take 3 shots and buy PS CS3 instead to clone out ghosts. smile

Is there a particular reason why you would want to use this 10kg monstrosity, where taking 3 shots will not suffice?
Sure, you'll save 11 seconds by only having to take one photo, but you'll lose more than that in setting that beast up!

For shooting at action events where the time to rotate will not work. i know the quality is not as good, I'll lose the zenith and nadir a bit, but the focus will be on the action going around, ALL around the camera(s).

Rotating a regular single shot (which I do with my Canon 40D and NN5) works great for still type images. The triple rig would be my secondary setup for more photojournalism type stuff at sporting and other events.

That's why I'd rather build something "on the cheap" because I don't know how well it will work out.

This is just a wild idea that has been floating around in my head for a while.

Configure 4 cameras in a tetrahedron. 3 around tilted down 30 degrees and one straight up. Use the same control idea and use the cheapest compact camera that has remote controls for a prototype. Maybe some old Nikon 5400's or something like that.

Plenty of overlap and you get to use the sweet spot of the fisheye -- if there is one -- another imaginary idea....

Disclaimer: I have no idea what I'm talking about.

with a camera at a 60 degree angle (off horizontal) and tilted 5 degrees up, a "barreled" shot will cover the zenith.

For action events, I guess, it would be required.
As for the zenith, chances are it could be cloned in (sky, ceiling) or, you could take a separate shot since there aint no action the zenith..

My guess is with "most" action events is that "where the action is" can strategically positioned within one of the 3 shots, in which case you wouldnt have to worry about movement. Any ghosts can be removed from the overlapped areas.
Unless offcourse, you're in the middle of the action. Then the 3 bracket setup is a must.

Well there must be some demand for it if Agnos have gone through the trouble to design and manufacture the blooming thing. blush
