Aerial Panos
Posted: 27 Jan 2008 at 5:33 GMT
Been a lurker here for the better part of a year. Did alot of ground based panos with a tripod and NN3 before trying my hand at aerial panos.

Inspiration came from Tabb and Dan. Seeing their pano work over the last couple years drove me to the point of needing to be able to do them myself.

As of last fall I had put together what I currently think to be my working setup. RC helicopter with rotating camera mount, a Nikon D40X and 10.5mm.

Now they are my life obsession. Seems like the past few months I live, eat, sleep, dream, and talk aerial panos.

so... I figured I'd stop in and give y'all the opportunity to see what months of reading all your great posts has turned into for me.

samples here:

Or course, I'm still learning alot about advanced stitching techniques with PTGui but I'm finally comfortable now putting up the helicopter and assuming that 95% of the time I'll be able to capture a pan that will turn out well enough to sell to a client.

Your site looks great with great panoramas!

What helicopter are you using?
I'm looking for the logo 10, just for learning to fly. Later planning to buy the maxi joker......

Great ideas... looks like you've taken your passion to 'new heights!' And we thought **we** had it difficult rotating around the nodal point... Much success...

Those are great aerial images.

One like the shot of the golf course would have been great with a virtual golf course tour I did in Ruidoso, NM

a Logo 700 (it's actually a stretched Logo 600). Alot of folks want to fly a Joker but I personally don't see the point. For aerial panos they don't fly any better than my Logo 700. I've owned a Joker and while it sure was a pretty helicopter, it is heavier than the Logo and much more expensive to acquire and repair.

basically I have a camera mount directly underneath the center of gravity of the helicopter. The camera mount has the ability to rotate in the pan axis. The camera is mounted in portrait orientation with the entrance pupil very close to the rotation axis.

I take about 8 shots all the way around. Using a bit of Photoshop work I remove the helicopter from above.

You don't pan, shoot, pan, shoot, pan, shoot.

It is not like a ground pano.

Aerial panos are done "on the fly".

Start a 360 continuous pan, and while doing it fire off continuous shots.

Just to add to Scott...

It's the reverse of ground panos. You patch the zenith not the nadir. Shoot with the camera angled down enough to cover the nadir.

By the way Mital

How is your flight training going? Practice, practice and practice on the sim... then practice some more... smile

Then get out there and fly! Practice your autos!
