Help! Does Vista Hate Quick Time or Pleinpot?

This is the weirdest thing. QT Pan looks great on my crt and laptop on xp. My neighbour is an Interior designer and did a kitchen make over for my other neighbour. They asked I shoot them a cylindrical pan of the finished product. I delivered a CD for them and had a peek on their brand new laptop with vista. The Quicktime looks like someone has set the monitor up for 16 bit, banding and weird aliasing everywhere, almost like a GIFF. Clicking on the .mov file everything looks normal again, going back to the web or clicking the html made with pleinpot and it goes back to looking like hell. The Java version does not have any problems with the banding from the same image on the web also made with pleinpot. Laptop has latest qt and updated Vista with a wide screen. Anyone else have a similar set up or had the same problem? Since I dont have vista I am clueless, looks great on my machine though Qt www.dylansurridge.com/vista/index.html Java www.dylansurridge.com/vista/index2.html I have heard of issues with vista64 but not the reg version. Cheers Dylan

Hi Dylan
www.virtualdenmark.dk/qtvr/16bit/qtvr16bit.html
That should solve your problem.
Interestingly enough, recently I also had a neighbour, an interior designer, who asked me to shot a make over of a kitchen they have done for a friend.

That was the first thing I checked, was set to 32 bit. Thats the puzzle as to why it looked liked 16. All xp machines play the QT smoothly (I Hope) Maybe there is a problem with regular vista and Pleinpot or other web delivery options?

This poblem has been discussed just a month ago on the QTVR list.
I discovered it back in 2003 already and it only occurs with cylindrical panos. It may have been exagerated recently perhaps with some update of Quicktime. Denis Gliksman did also an investigation about it back in 2003.
Here is the thread at the QTVR list lists.apple.com/arcªhives/quicktime-vr/2007/Dec/msg00085.html

Hmm.
I've checked this on my system more thoroughly, Windows XP SP2.
Firefox 2.0.0.11 = banding
IE 7.0.5730.11 = no banding
Netscape 8.1.3 (display like Firefox) = no banding
Netscape 8.1.3 (display like IE) = no banding
Opera 9.21.8776 = no banding
Obviously the problems doesn't lie with the source mov, rather the bug is within the script by Pleinpot.
Check if it is linked with this:

The script from Pleinpot has nothing to do with it.
I just checked the link in my XP IE6 1280x1024 no banding Widescreen 1280x800 and reloading This triggers the banding exactly as described in the thread above.
The easiest way to avoid it is to convert to a Cubic Movie.

Thanks so much guys, I would never have guessed that being a cylindrical would have been the issue for wide screen. Dumb question though, how come when I open the .mov independant of the html and open that full screen it displays fine? Thanks again Dylan

The opposite happens here, so I wouldn't be so sure about that.
1280 x 1024, banding in Firefox, not in IE and the others.
When changing to widescreen the banding actually disappears entirely in all the above specified browsers, including IE.

1280x800 does reproduce the effect I saw on the new laptop they had. Ugly stuff. I converted to cubic but then I get straight lines curving now and other weird distortions www.dylansurridge.com/v2
I am shocked at Quicktime not working with Cylindrical panoramas though. The Java solution looks almost as good as quicktime, maybe time to dump QT altogether? I am quite sad at the thought of many of my clients looking at my work on wide screens now. Cheers Dylan

Your original cylindric already have bowed horizontal lines.
I guess that both your original and your cubic are made from wrong projections.
If I convert your original to Cubic with CubicConverter they are identical.
What did you stitch with and what did you use to make the movies.

Thanks so much Hans, the last two images where made with ptgui, stitched as cylindrical. Secound one I grabbed the wrong file, Im drowning in test images. www.dylansurridge.com/cubedcylinder/ made with ptgui but stitched for spherical. Cubic qtvr, worked great at 1280x800. Still shaking my head at the 4000 pans I have stitched as cylindrical, anything I can do about that? Cheers Dylan

I guess this problem has always been there but extreme widescreen is something introduced during the last years. Cylindrical QTVR used to be published in a fixed size of 640x480 or less.
You can set the cylindrical with the tag ASPECT insted of TOFIT That means your original aspect ratio is used. It will not change to fill all the width of the browser when it is shown on a wide screen. I believe there is an option in Pleinpot for it. But you need to have the movie background set to the same as the page background Maybe Pleinpot does that automatically.
