Need to buy a fisheye lens but I have a question

Hi, for some reasons I need to buy a fisheye lens, particulary Sigma 8mm 3.5 for my Canon 350D but for other some reasons I cannot afford a new one so I must to ask which are the reasons to NOT BUY a second-hand Sigma 8mm 3.5 , I read in a post of Hans about some error (i guess Err 9 or so) on camera which is fitted with a older than 4 years lens, not sure that I remember exact but with old lenses anyway.

How goes the price for such lens, again S/H, and of course if anyone has such lens for sale?

thanks,
Dorin

Hi Dorin,
The Sigma 8/3.5 is just ±1 year on the market, so you can't get one of 4 years old.
I ordered it in dec. last year and had to wait about 6 weeks.
I doubt you can get a SH for a nice price.
Forget the 4.0 version !! The 3.5 is much, much, much better.
A Tokina 10-17 is cheaper and maybe that could be a solution.
(great lens too)
Have Fun !

As far as I remember it is only lenses made before 2002. I got mine in the summer of 2002 and got the old type. It worked fine with my D60 but when I upgraded to 10D I had to send it for repair to get it to work.
They made it for free at Sigma Germany, it took a couple of weeks.

You can probably find several of the old 4.0 version for sale but the new 3.5 could be harder to find.

Dorin

I think that you will find it hard to get a s/h f 3.5 but please - do the lottery, sell the cat, hold up a bank, anything- but don't buy the f4 - it's horrible and you will regret it for ever.

Best

The f/3.5 lens was first marketed in June 2006 but only became available in the UK around September. As people are generally pleased with the lens and it has been around for such a short time, it is not surprising that used examples are so far quite rare. The going rate new from Hong Kong seems to be about £300.

Dorin, Forget the old Sigma F4!!! As you have spent tons of hours, days weeks and months helping the Gang in this forum to improve our work it’s possibly that you forget to make some Money to buy new toys to continue your research and to improve the work of tons of people here.

So I have a better idea:

It’s time to help Dorin to get the new toy! It is possible to ask James Rigg to add PayPal donation button here on the forum (help Dorin to get new Sigma F3.5 fish eye). I’ll put the first $20 bucks. And with the generosity on tons of all our Gang Members, you will get your new lens faster than a 1/500 shot.

And please, do us a favor and do not sell the cat or your kidney wink

Would anyone else want to second this initiative? I’m sure a lot will.

cheers

Doesn't necessarily have to be on this site? I mean I have seen a few sites with paypal buttons for development etc, isn't this much the same thing really.

Great idea!

Dorin's contribution and talent are obvious. He is always ready to help others.

I hope you are not in any way offended Dorin.

Consider this - I myself have received good discounts and even free items from members here like Photo Bill (the great Nodal Ninja) and Jose (3DVista). It is great to give a little back.

I pledge my $20-.

Regards,

Morten

Hi all, this will be difficult post.

First of all thanks to the posters for info about Sigma 8 mm 3.5
I was concerned about some ageing regarding this lens, But for kindly reply of Hans I understand than is no such problem, There (is)was a myth that the lens(glass) is for lifetime, but I saw some pictures on internet with component of a modern/electronic lens with hairsize electric colector contacts, myprocessor so on and I may re-think about the myth. But again I'm glad that is not the case. I knew that is a recent lens and my wonder was if that failure could be 1/4 in a one year old Sigma.

As the things seems to be, I'll be able to buy an 4 year old Sigma 8mm 3.5 after all, mean in a 3 years from now. To buy it now as new is not possible for me.

About the donation thing, I'm wordless not becouse I generally found right English words with difficulties but becouse is such an unespected turn.

This sort of thing generally happens in the movies becouse the world there ends after 2 hours (unless is The Lords of the Rings or so) and happens on the good guys,
Is true, I own couple of things which came to me as gift donation so on, in the similar way and that make me think to try to be a good guy but now I'm really really puzzled

I don't have a paypal accout becouse wasn't possible, Romania wasn't listed there I even not receive some money for a job I've done becouse only way to pay was paypal, now Romania seems to be listed there but not sure if there are some limitation/restriction, I use moneybokers.com to make and to receive some international payments to lesser the wire taxes, but the setup is kind of complicate ..

Really not what to say, the fisheye lens studenly become on buy list becouse of recent experiments with DevalVR in showing an unstitched pano, which seems to works, I give for a pano the required amount of time to be as the quality I want, but I have couple of recquest and I see a signficat potential for that kind of pano which can be done only with a sigma 8mm 3.5 with my camera.

To answer to Morten's P.S. the viewer is DevalVR I only happen to have some ideas and wrote some scripts which fits to DevalVR great possibilities
I'll produce a free way for any photographer to use the method, now is a simple bat file for the demos posted I've sent an working archive to the photographers which has kindly provided the photos and the method works
My intention is to offer much control (variable resolution of certain areas and other things, which will turn the simple .bat file in a little freeware windows application to produce/publish and for preview. But again is DevalVR and when Fiero will be less busy and he can include some slow parts which now are by javascript, like group of images visible only for an interval of rotx or roty the performances will be increased.

Thank you all for all

Hi Dorin!!

U are right, Romania have paypay service. Just open an account is very easy, or we can use another Gang memeber to do the donations then that member can buy and send the lens to you. Some one live near to Dorin? Fiero? Take your time and tell us what U think and what to do.
