AutoStitch demo release
Posted: 23 Nov 2004 at 6:53 GMT
AutoStitch is a fully automatic, full view panorama stitcher being developed at the University of British Columbia.

We now have a free demo version available at:

www.autostitch.net

Please try it out and let us know what you think!

Cheers-

Matt.

Hi Matt,

I have given your baby a test drive on two sets of my own images and the results were amazing!

So simple and exact results. "Brilliant"

Well done and all the best for the future.

I gave it a try with the most difficult set of pictures I have ever stitched. It is a bathroom interior. I was pleasently surprised at the results. I can't believe that software that is this automated can be as accurate as this one is. There were a few problem areas, but I had trouble with this picture set in Realviz Stitcher, and that software cost $600.00
I had error messeges on a few tries, and it split my pano up once. However I understand that this is a work in progress. You guys are on the right track, and once it's dialed in it is definently something that will sell.

Great Job

I've had some mixed results with autostitch. One picture I just tried came out remarkably well, considering it was handheld, Sigma 18mm lens, scanned from film, etc.

On the other hand, I've tried shots taken carefully using a tripod, panoramic head etc, and found problems with the last image stitching back with the first - perhaps Autostitch determines the lens incorrectly to be narrower than it is so doesn't realise the 12th and 1st should overlap?

I also tried a few fisheye shots. Autostitch appears to understand the lens, but is unable to work out the alignment and just renders a bit of a mess. (For the record I tested the CoolPix E8 adaptor for the 990 used in full-frame mode.)

However I agree with the other comments above. This is an exciting development and one that will pave the way for far more people getting involved in panoramic photography.

Aside from the "home user" who wants a no-fuss way of stitching images, I imagine this kind of system would also appeal to anyone processing large numbers of pictures and needing to do so quickly - real estate agents who do photography in house?

James,

Thanks for the kind words.

AutoStitch is actually not designed to deal with images with radial distortion e.g. fisheye images, because it assumes a pinhole camera model (straight lines in the world are straight in the image). The results might look OK if there is not too much radial distortion though.

As for failing to join panoramas, this might be due to the images having a small area of overlap. AutoStitch works best with lots of image overlap, as this makes it easier to tell which images should match. Given that you have already shot the images though, there are options that you can change to encourage more image matches to be found, these are explained in the README file accompanying the distribution.

For people interested in the mechanics of how AutoStitch actually works, and it's limitations, please see our research page:

i have just stitched a 360-filmpanorama of 3 pcs-120- formerly successfully stitched with panorama factory in automatic mode.
part 1 and 2 cannot be stitched because overlapping is quite small. how can i adapt the program?
a slight line can be seen in the stitching zone of part2 and 3.
i hope we can see instructions somewhere explaining all the settings.
btw: i just wanted to ask this night if somebody knows of your program and where to find it(didnt remember) and asking if demo is already available.
i am just about scanning 35mm-negatives too made with horizon s3-pro. i am inmidst calibrating(colornegative, exposure, colors) in vuescan. i havee found experts/tips.

Very promising demo.
Any way i propose to look at my blending soft. I sure it can improve AutoStitch.

I sent the mail , but still have no answer, so i put my proposition here.
You can use my soft for free in demo version.
( demo can be found on www.anything3d.com as "intellectual blending")

More advanced version a can send by mail.

AutoStitch fail easy for rotated by 90 deg pictures.

If a take some horizontal series of pictures and one of tham rotate by 90 deg, match failed.

I think it is because the HFOV for all pictures is taken the same ? it can be corrected (if need )using relative ( to pixels ) HFOV.

Many of my test series stitched perfectly , but some of them with good overlay but with moving objects fails on MATCH.

Edit:
( When i changed Alpha parameter of RANSAC it work OK)

To answer minorlogic's question: if you want to stitch images that are rotated 90 degrees, you should turn "AutoStraighten" to OFF in the options, since this option assumes that images have the same rotation.

Triggerhappy: you can change the setting "System Memory" in the options dialog if you are running out of memory.

Cheers, have fun with the demo!

I am really amazed at your demo. It took care of panorama that I could not get properly lined up even with panotools.

The only issue is that the resulting blended area where objects (people/trees) have moved are really not looking good. It would be nice to use the also amazing blending engine of anything3d in autostitch.

keep up the good work and research project.

Hi;

The results with your demo images was great - I'll try it with some of my own later. I'm on Win XP pro. Whenever the program runs, it leaves a DOS command window open.
