nikkor 10,5 or sigma 8 on a nikon d50

This questions are mostley directed at KristaJ since I know that he has smilar gear (he has the d70 instead of the d50 but I belive the sensor is almoast the same). But if anyone else has similar gear that would be grreat to.
Previosly I did ask a question regarding many lenses but I hav now narrowd it down to two lenses and these are Nikkor 10,5 and Sigma 8mm.
I have understod that the nikkor has better quality but do you that have the D70 think that the quality is significant?
I would love to see 4 unstiched pictures for a 360 panorama taken with the d70, sigma 8mm in highest jpg format. 6 unstiched pictures for a 360 panorama taken with the d70, nikkor 10,5 mm in highest jpg format.
No need for nadir end zenit.
I know its a bit of job but It would help me alot... If you dont have the space on the net I could put them on my server so others can compare them aswell...
My mail is peter.finnberg(at)gmail.com
I understand if its too much work though..
Thanx in advance, Peter F

Peter,
I don't have any of you're interested but I stitched and tried to make best quality panos taked by others both with sigma 8mm and 10,5 mm on D70 and in my oppinion worth for going with Nikkor.
I cannot provide the photos of course but as a multi-row pano makers like you are, I'm no doubt about choosing Nikkor if I must to make pano with fisheye
hope this helps Dorin

Hey Peter,
This is my opinion: Nikkor 10,5 takes sharper images but when you convert images to Web there is not a lot differece. Mostly I use Sigma and I tilt panohead 10 degrees up, so there is no hole in zenit. This is a fast way to make panoramas.
Normaly I make sphere panoramas (360 x 180) . Krista

On the subject of the Nikkor 10.5 Fisheye... Has anyone been able to find them available lately. I have been watching several of the big mailorder places (B&H, Adorama, Amazon) and no one has had the 10.5 in stock for a couple of months now. I ordered one with Amazon back on Jan. 6th that is yet to even get a real shipping date.
Is Nikon dropping or changing the lens?!?

Last week I asked my supplier about this lens. Yesterday he called me to tell that Nikon in the Netherlands don't know when it will be available, but certainly not before june 2007.

you could try the tokina 10-17mm, its a little bit less expensive, and works well on the Nikon mount. - Shel

I had the same problem, no 10.5 on any of the major websites...ordered one from Beach Camera (claimed was in stock) only to find out a week later that it wasn't and they should be "here next week" - yeah right. Anyways, I finally went to old trusty eBay and I had one from a reliable nikon reatailer in my office in a matter of 4 days (2 of which where sat and sun). FYI - I got it from Cameta Camera but there are alot of others as well. I also checked every craigslist (crazedlist.org) around the entire country and not even 1 on there which is pretty amazing.
I actually have a Nikon D50 with the 10.5 and it is a fantastic lense and I love it.
Good Luck!

I had the same problem when I ordered a Nikkor 10.5 back in October from my local camera shop in Canada. The shop put the order but weeks later and the lens never arrived! so I was mad, but he was told by Nikon Canada that the lens is out of stock and might take few months to get it! so I canceled the order and did some search and found that Henry's have it in stock, but I called and made sure they have it for sure and ordered one.
I use it with D80 and very happy with it.

Thanx for all your answers...
But now Im just more comfused... I was leaning towards the sigma but you guys just keeps on talking about the Nikkor... (I hope you all hear the sarcasm in my voice)
The reason I whant to by the sigma is that I want a really fast way to shoot a pano, both for the sake of being fast and for the ability to take "action panos". I belive I still will take multirow, 18mm, panos on buildings and still objects...
So if it is a fast alternativ to multirows, isnt the sigma the right choice??? (please say yes)

Peter,
Jan Zieba uses Sigma lens and I belive also John Houghton does. It's hard to find (if is any) better stitched panos, taked with fisheye, than panos of those gentlemens regardles of lens used so it's a big YES for sigma, work and talent nedeed is something that you prooved to have so go for the sigma as fast alternative.

Peter,
I use both Sigma 8/f3.5 and Nikkor 10,5.
Sigma is great for fast shooting, handheld and monopod panos. Very resistant to flare, good contrast and color. But the resolution on the edges noticeably falls.
Nikkor is a must for situations when you need higher resolution. Not only the output pano size is bigger with Nikkor(on 6Mp camera - 8300x4150 for Nikkor vs. 5800x2900 for Sigma), the quality of image is quite different from Sigma, Nikkor is much sharper.
I would say you need both
Cheers, Andrey

I go along with what Andrey says. I think you will be happy with the Sigma for your immediate purposes, but you might find yourself lusting after a Nikkor 10.5 as well, later on.

If you really need to do the action shots go with the Sigma. But honestly I can take a full pano with my 10.5 and Nodal Ninja in like 10-15 seconds with a remote and just keep on turning the head as fast as you can - very quick. Quality is as good as you can get.
