A Mac-Intel, because you can install WindowsXP in your Mac and you will have 2 computers in 1. I use an iMac now with BootCamp and WindowsXP and it works very well smile. I read good things about Parallels too.

Hi Fiero

Yes I noticed that - So does that just emulate - or works seperately?

I am leaning towards a real powerful homemade PC but can I get a real grunty Mac for similar price?

Will a mac laptop give me enough grunt?

Any others

With Bootcamp it works separately (natively), without emulation. When computer starts you can choose Windows or MacOSX.
I haven't tested 'Parallels', but it runs under MacOS and can run WindowsXP into a window. I think this is not an emulation, because the two OS are created for same processor.

A Mac is a bit more expensive than a PC, for expansions too (although some parts like RAM memory could be compatible with PC components), maybe some Mac user could explain if there is more advantages

You can also run OSX on a PC, I think I found that out through a post on these forums actually. It doesn't look as easy as running Windows on a Mac though.

I'd go with a PC, because you can run Windows (many flavors, 2k, XP, XP 64 bit, 2k3 server, Vista, etc) and a ton of Linux variations.

PC hardware is usually cheaper (although now that Macs use PC hardware that's not an issue for everything)

one example: the Apple Cinema 30" LCD is $2000.
The Dell 30" LCD is $1400.
Both us an LG LCD internally, but the Dell has better specs (a little bit faster refresh rate, contrast ratio, viewing angle).

So, if you love Apple, go ahead and spend the extra $600 on their little logo...

Me, I go for cheap and powerful.

There are more softwares for PC, but the ones than runs on a Mac will run much smoother.

I will never change my Mac for nothing, at least so far.

I use windows XP on Parallels and I consider it more practical than Bootcamp, where you must restart your machine to run windows. Parallels is amazing and solid aplication.

But with time I think I will consider buying a PC just to let my Mac in a pure state of mind.

And of course, you can install the Dell 30" monitor in the Mac, piece of cake!

OK now i`m leaning torawds an Imac..... confused

Been on PC since the 286 and I fancy a change! I like the ease of upgrading on PC - but Mac? Would it be hard?

Sorry if this thread is off topic - I`m gonna use it for VR and seeing Eric Rogier's Mac perform on fromparis.com/html/technical_us_create_a_quicktim...

I would be happy! On mine I could learn the guitar as well as play it! smile Well its about 8 mins a pop anyway.

thanks for the discussion though

Why not just get one of each? If you like the mac, get a mac (hey if OS X was available for MY PC, without all that restriction nonsense, I'd give it a go)

Just network your boxes together. Then, you can shoot jobs over to be rendered on whichever is more powerful.

Virtual machines are nice, but remember, they take overhead, so you do lose some of the performance.

You can also get an a/b switch for your monitor (or a kvm for your keyboard, video, mouse) and hook 2 machines up to 1 monitor.

The real deciding factor is which platform has the software you want? If you can get by with all of it on one box, then you'll save alot of money. If there's a "must have" tool only available on the other platform, then, see if the other tools are also available for that platform.

My own experience from having multiple machines is that one usually sits idle most of the time.

here is the answer to your question.

this is simple like someone before me posted, it is now very easy to run windows on a mac box. therefor if money is not that big of an issue go with the mac, you will spend more but it will be worth it.

the question should read "laptop or desktop" and the answer to that is also simple do you want it to be portable? yes=laptop no=desktop

with the new iMacs and the macbook pros the actual machines are very similar in performance. unless you budget is a little larger then go mac pro, and if you need to know why just ask, i will tell you.

all that being said, i am the person who posted that you can run OSX on a PC, it is not as easy as going the other way but it is possible, so if you are a pc person and want a feel for apple before investing the money it is a good way to try the environment.

as for your software requirements, well mac will do many things better video, flash...what ever...but not simple real estate qtvrs there is no software like easypano or 3dvista for macosx BUT many softwares are starting to run in osx so maybe soon.

if you need any more...ASK

This is not completely true, there's so much mis-information on forums about Apple products that it's difficult to know who to believe.

It's true that both the Apple and Dell use panels from LG (not all Apple panels are from LG though). There are massive differences though that do justify the price difference:

1. Apple use only A grade panels. Most Dell panels are C or D grade.

2. The backlighting used in the displays is totally manufacturer dependent. The backlighting used in Apples displays are much, much better than the Dell displays. Most of the newer Dell displays are far too bright and cannot be calibrated accurately enough for colour critical work. The backlighting and software is far more important than the actual panel.

3. Apple 23 and 30" displays are swop certified meaning you're guaranteed accurate colours from screen to print if you use a properly calibrated and coloursync managed workflow. The Dell displays don't even come close to passing the certification tests.

So to say that the Apple and Dell displays are the same just based on the panel coming from the same factory is completely ignorant.

Matt.

I have to agree with Matt. Mac's have always had the best WYSIWYG. I have 2 G4's, one with a Dell the other the Apple Cimema. The Dell just can not be adjusted to give 'what you see is what you get'.

The late G4's and perhaps now G5 models are a bargain. You can easily add/replace components, something not do-able in an iMac or iBook. If you get one (G4) and later want more out of it you can swap over all your periphials to the latest Mac.

Hope this helps-

I have taken all advise and I love it - only took about 3 hours to get used to it!

Just have to think about slowly swapping software now!!

Thanks
