Framing/mounting long panoramas
Posted: 12 Oct 2005 at 4:43 GMT
I would like to have suggestions for mounting and framing long panoramas. I have one 350cmx41 cm = 140"x16.5" which the customer want me to frame for him. The local frame shops in my small hometown don't have any good suggestions. Are there foamboard or similar in a suitable size?

Hi Jakob,

350cm is too long for gator board or foam core. If it is possible, I would suggest sticking it directly to a wall using framer's mounting adhesive and then placing a false frame around it.

there is a german company offering metallic bars of 1m for 22 euro. one for top and one for bottom. this is ideal. i must check my files next week. maybe i must use it myself very soon.

2. there is a system which stutz fotocolor technik(bremgarten-switzerland) used. that lab is specialist for panoramas-has new name but stutz is still there. i have no time checking. do it yourself. the posters will be laminated(ideal) and will be put in a special frame. ideal for fairs. first idea is quickest and cheapest solution. second one is not cheap but affordable.

Hi mate, we also make signs and something of this dimensions we would use something called eurotrim (aluminium & PVC), we get it in lengths of upto 4m, to mount foamboard etc, use 2 pieces of the foamboard to mount your pic on then use something like eurotrim to frame it, quite easy to do.

combirama is that special frame-construction by stutz imaging-bremgarten switzerland. i dont know what is going on with the patent. i used combirama 13 years ago.
i have hanging panposter glued directly on wall with scotch 3m removable foam tape. 0.4mm thick, very flexible. no residues when removing(but could destroy surface when old).
i did not mount that tape on full lenght but only on some points. every corner plus inside. but after some time poster is sliding down by its own weight. i am sure if more tape is used this is the ideal solution. i once had an exhibition where i taped carpet tape(most stupid one) onto wooden panels. hardly possible to remove residues.

Thanks for the suggestions,

For the moment I am going for 8mm thick Masonite fiber board produced locally ( www.masonite.se ) in length of about 3.6 meter. I went to the factory last week and bought a few pieces. The board has a very hard and smooth surface, and I have got satisfying results by using waterproof wallpaper glue.

I and my father (who has the room for such boards and does the glueing) have still just made a few experiments on smaller panoramas, but this week will do the real ones.

the problem if displaying large panoramas is lacking felxibility. i prefer my poster to be transported in rolled form. this can only be done with the scotch tape or these poster-schienen(rails). talk to the owner how you can add multiple 1m-schienen(rails)
