Peleng or Sigma??

Just got my D70. Now I've no $$ for a lens. But I will sell some of my old gear to find some. I can buy a Peleng for about $190USD delivered. The Sigma is $600USD. I have seen some excellent panos done with the Peleng. Also, I am aware of the flare issues with the Peleng. So I guess my question is, as I am a newbie shoting panos, should I buy the Peleng which I can afford now, or save for a couple of months, and get the Sigma??
Thanks for your input.

Hi,
Save for a couple more months and get the Nikkor 10.5mm.

Sigma is a great lens. Don't know about the peleng. I've heard from several reviews across the wire that their quality control is an issue. Sometimes what you get is great and sometimes what you get is not so great (ie., metal shavings in the lens barrel). I don't know how true that is but I'd put my money on a Sigma(only 400-450 US dollars, not 600), which I own and love. But, yes, a nikkor would be nice, of course!

Ditto. Maybe buy the Peleng now and save up for Nikon 10.5.

I was in the same situation and bought the Peleng. Its a good lens for the money I think. I've just started taking Panoramas with it. From what Ive seen the Sigma seems to be a little sharper at the edges. Also I notice, especially on the ground, slight color changes between shots. Can be a little troublesome. You can see some of my first tries with the Peleng at ...... www.pellepiano.com/qtvr/peleng/eriksdal.html ( I have used a simple monopod, as I want to be able to take a panorama whenever I want without any special equipment ). I still miss things when stitching, but its getting better.

Thank-you all for your input. Peleng it is cause I just want to take panos and my patience is lacking. Then save, save, save for the Nikon...
Cheers E

Pelle,
Not bad at all for the first pano - I was always saying that in right hands Peleng can be quite capable

So long as you actually get good one and keep the sun hidden/defused. Otherwise you will end up with major lens flare problems.

Most of bad panos suffers from poor skills, not from hardware.
Actually the initial question is rhetorical. Ony the man who ask it, can deside if he can wait two months and buy sigma instead of peleng, or he can wait even three months and buy nikkor. I remember my state when I just discovered panoramic photography - even a couple of weeks of waiting could kill me Thanks God I had free $700 for Nikkor!

Just don't want to see newbies all upset with the Peleng when they find out about the lens flare issue.
The Peleng is fine, just don't lets the sun get in your shot.
For warned is for armed.

From someone who has shot about 500 spherical panos with the peleng, and about the same with the sigma:
Lens flare: both have lens flare. on sigma it's a colored hexagon or two, on the peleng it's a white circle opposite the sun. Actually flare is WORSE on a cloudy day with the peleng. Erik Krause observed that the flare from the peleng is the result of some of the internal parts not being painted black. At any rate, given you'll be using panotools and some blending algorithm, the flare usually is blended out of the final panorama.
Image quality: sigma is sharper IF you correct the CA. Peleng gives a bigger image. (final pano is 7000x3500 vs. 6000x3000 with sigma)
Additionally! You'll probably shoot a zenith shot more often than not with the peleng as you'd otherwise have a hole on top (not so much the case with sigma). As a result you'll be using better quality image (more of the center) with 5 shots than if you do 4 shots with the sigma. basically, the lenses are different, and you shoot with them differently.
Another bonus for you forgetful folk, the focus on the peleng doesn't slip because it's a manual lens with a stiff ring. It's also smaller.
All that being said, I now use the sigma on my tripod, and keep the string tied around the peleng for handhelds.
I'll do an in-depth review of both lenses side by side when i have some free time!
so my advice, buy peleng, and then get the nikkor 10.5 (check andrey's kickass panos for examples) when you have the cash!

Absolutely not true! I shoot all my panoramas with a Sigma 8mm and I NEVER have a lens flare problem....

It's true, Sun flare comes from both Peleng and Sigma (also Nikkor 10.5 Shoosh, don't tell anybody!)
What is true is that the Peleng is prone to it and it gets very ugly. Where as, the Sigma's flare is quite pretty in the right panorama. Much like the options offered by Immervision and their "add sun flare" option the software viewers they offer like G2.
For those who protest that the Peleng should not be picked on or have anything bad said about it. I say show us the results with the sun in full view uninterrupted. I would like to see a nice star effect not a HUGE bloom blowout of white covering half or more of the panorama.
If we see this then I will stand corrected and lay off telling people not to buy the lens "if you plan to shoot with the sun in view"
My advice is to save for the Nikkor 10.5mm if you can't wait to save your best bet is the Sigma 8mm. If the sun doesn't shine in your part of the world or you shoot indoors then the Peleng is fine.
Remember it's just my opinion take out of it what you will.

There Smooth, not just one but a lot of them, a "nice" star shaped sun with the peleng, and oh I also see its a LOT sharper than any of the sigma panos I've seen and don't worry I did notices the flare on all of them, but I made a short survey with all my friends (and even some clients) comparing one of your panos (nothing personal, just easy ton find a sigma pano in your page) with full sun on it vs one of those shots, guess wich one EVERYONE choose?.

Enjoy bashing those as I know you will
