Re: Canon-Nikon adapter for 10,5mm

Thanks for the info … this has been bugging me for a while now… I can’t think of better lens for spherical panos than the 10.5mm fisheye … and if it works on a 20D it’s good news.
So, are there any significant image quality differences between a 20D and a D70 when using the 10.5mm lens ?
I’m sure you can find a better lens mount adapter and retain the ability to focus at infinity … it might be more expensive, though … like this Novoflex : www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=produc...

You have 20% more resolution. It is almost the same as with a D2X D70 8.000 pixels Canon 20D 10.000 pixels D2X 11.200 pixels I like Canon colors more than Nikon.
The lens is focused at infinity. The problem is that it focuses beyoind infinity if you turn it all the way. No problem, I always tape my lenses at a fixed point for panoramas. The Novoflex is 4 times more expensive.

Well, I’m glad it works … but a 10.5mm fisheye lens for Canon mount would sure be nice (who knows, maybe Sigma will produce one).

Hi Hans
Ok -is your lens ALWAYS focused to infinity for panos? If so does this help with using a template? Why do you use tape? I presume that this is to ensure the lens/focus ALWAYS remains in the same position? Why is this important? For general shooting panoramas AND template stitching...
What difference do you find if the lens is set to 'infinity' and/or 'just/beyond infinity'...
This is very interesting because Matt at 360P said I should always set the lens to infinity and stick down with tape - he said this a long time ago and I am doing it for my new calibration scene shoot..
Information like this might help us get good template results (as well as all the other skills us newbies need
Regards
Lee

Be careful. The fact is that both Nikon and Sigma makes many lenses which can focus beyond infinity. It is very easy to just turn the lens all the way to get infinity but on these lenses that is not infinity. The effect on the focus is very different from lens to lens. I just got a new Sigma 10-20mm and it is catastrophic if you do it. The same effect as that I get from the russian adapter. www.panoramas.dk/technics/focus.html
This is why I tape my lenses usually at a place between infinity and 1 m.

Speaking of adaptors...
Has anyone heard of an adaptor (homemade or otherwise) allowing one to attach a polarizing filter for this lens?
I'm thinking of making one...wondering how big the polarizer would need to be.
