Google photo spheres, thoughts?

Ever since the creation of the google business photos scheme, i've wandered how long it would take Google to create a far more user friendly (i.e. no cost!) and easier way to create these types of tours for small local businesses. Google have been working on the photo spheres aspect for a few years and now it seems it's being pushed out further, with national features in the press of late.

For those that don't know, users can now basically create their own street view 360 tour for uploading the google maps. It's free, and can be done by anyone with a camera phone or indeed a DSLR.

Where does this leave google trusted togs? The quality is not as good as the, still poor, trusted tog product but time will allow for the software to get far more advanced in it's stitching in order to match the standard 8mm fisheye setup. Edited to add, if you can also use your own DSLR images to create a tour online why do we need google 'trusted' togs?

Lets face it, as far as Google are concerned they have no moral concern for those that have signed up to the GBP program and many which have based their business on this type of service. If google can create something that allows anyone to upload tours to maps for free, they will push for it, and it seems they are.

Is Google Inc. and their photographers affected by recent changes to US Patent 6,754,400 B2 and revised C1 ?

Hi Nick,

You may download the PDF file: click on the button at the top right of the page www.google.com/patents/US6754400?hl=fr&dq=US67544...

After reexamination, the dreaded Patent "400" (US 6,754,400 B2) has become US 6,754,400 Cl and the related four-pages amendment (i.e, the revised detailed list of claims) is appended at the end of this PDF.

Best regards,

Michel

What this also allows is those who didn't want to get into bed with Google to be able to create their own street view tours for clients. No need to be a 'trusted' tog any more.
