Has anyone done a comparison of the three most recent versions of Autopano, Hugin, and PTGui?

My guess is that there isn't a recent comparison of the three. Times aren't what they used to be when the discussions were more active. The panorama world seems to have faded to black.

the pano community on facebook is quite active, facebook does not replace privately hosted forums like panoguide imo, but it seems to be where the majority of the pano community regulars prefer to hang put these days

www.facebook.com/groups/panoramicphotographers/

a few recent discussions lately about relative merits of one app vs another, here are a couple example searches for posts containing ptgui + autopano etc

www.facebook.com/groups/panoramicphotographers/se...

www.facebook.com/groups/panoramicphotographers/se...

not as many results if you search for all 3 terms at once

You are right Sam in that Facebook is where the activity seems to be located. However, there doesn't seem to be the in-depth software comparison like there used to be in the panotools yahoo group and here. These days it seems like "Here are your choices. Try them and see if one works for you. If you are a newbie, good luck."

Oh well. Everything has a lifecycle and it looks like the panorama world has matured into:

Nodal Ninja
Autopano/PTGui
plus a multitude of display options.

Ironically, in the beginning it was the other way around. There were a lot of competing stitchers and panorama heads and basically Quicktime or Java for viewing.

Thanks Sam and John. I think you two are right. Sam, the activity moved to Facebook. John, the market has matured and the options relatively limited on the high end though there are a lot more basic stitchers especially when include all the in-camera panorama programs.

Just for grins, I checked out panomonkey.com which is related to this site. While the panomonkey.com site is up, traffic on their blog is almost non-existent. I tried stitching some photos with it and it uploaded the photos but gave me an error after uploading each photo.

Well, it was fun while it was new. Now I only do the occasional panorama anyway. Nothing hard core or professional so I guess I'll go with Hugin as it is free.

i think the pano community started with academic types who were interested in photography more from an optical physics perspective or as a hobby, but as the technology and market have matured it has become more working pro and amateur hobbyist photographers who are less interested in the methods and more in the results

but there is still a lot of in depth discussion on the relative merits of different apps & methods, newcomers just gotta spend a bit of time doing some research and ask better questions if they want better answers smile

for stitching, all 3 apps are capable of producing excellent results, i think the only major differences would be price and workflow, ptgui & autopano both have free demos and hugin is totally free so try 'em all
