Google + Panorama display

It seems that Google+ has a built in ability to display 360/180 panoramas (in its lightbox display feature).
From what I can tell this works in the latest Chrome and Firefox but not in IE9 so it may be HTML5 based.

is a sample (admittedly badly done).
The sample was done apparently with a Nexus phone and built in software and Android 4.2.
Anybody have a clue how this is done and how to create (and upload) one using more conventional methods (Hugin would be my choice)?
