Nikon D5100

Hi! I want to know if anybody has any reference in the performance/use of the Nikon D5100. I have the D90 / 10.5 combo. I know that in some features it is downgrading, but I´ve read that the 5100 performs better in the higher ISO range than the D90. Does it? If anybody could share his/her experience, thanks. Regards, Martin

I have a D5100/10.5mm combo exclusively for 360 work, replacing a D200. I didn't think it a retrograde step as each new generation of Nikon provides a vast improvement in image quality and this is clear to see.
I also appreciate the compact size and useful adjustable info screen which is a great help with my failing eyesight! I can also leave the battery in without it draining within a few days.
The main drawback I have found is simply in the handling. Whereas before I could make settings with dedicated buttons, I now have to go into the menu settings. This I have got used to but the one major annoyance is that the info screen is disconnected when you plug in a cable release. This is not so good if you lose track when bracketing or want to quickly check camera settings during shooting.

Presumably not an issue if you use an IR remote?

Indeed, not an issue with the IR remote, however the latter is not so good for bracketing. With the cable release it will stop at three shots in continuous mode. With the IR remote it will just keep going!
I use the IR remote mostly and just press the shutter three times in single shot mode.

It's just those sort of foibles that one can never get to know before buying a camera.
Thanks for the insight.

Gary: You may want to try a Vello remote IR. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/753842-REG/Vello_R... I use one for my D7000 and it will shoot 3 bracketed shots on Ch and then stop, emulating the camera's shutter release. My Phottix remote did not do this, so I was happy to find the Vello did.

I've already accumulated a large collection of remotes that I've learned to get along with but I'll make a note of that one for the future.

I need to upgrade my body (no, not that body), and the D5100 is currently at the top of my list. I asked this question on another forum, but the answers were a little ambiguous.
Does the 5100 have a way to lock the white balance? Currently, I have the option of either going with a preset balance (daylight, clouds, etc.) or measuring from a white/grey source. Neither of these is perfect. I'd prefer to aim at a location, have it auto-select the white balance and lock that setting in.

It will do a preset WB which I would say is probably as accurate as you're going to get, or shoot RAW and deal with it in post processing.
