Really Right Pano Head

I am putting together a panoramic kit, at present i am focusing on getting the right kind of head, the RRS PG-02 Pro Omni-Pivot Package and the Ultimate-Pro Omni-Pivot Package are currently my favs, with the nodal ninja M1-L also in the race for my dollars, the largest lens i have is the nikkor 70=200 2.8, but i am very interested in using longer lenses in the future, so stability is an important factor for me, i am confused as to the differences between the two RRS heads and would like some help understanding the differences between them, i will be wanting to create multi row pano's,cheers

Not having a PG-02. But its variant, PG-02 Full Gimbal Head, is designed to support 500mm F4.
So here is my guess
Strength:

RRS PG-02 > NN M1L > RRS Ultimate-Pro Omni-Pivot.

Major difference in RRS and Nodal Ninja lines in rotators. Nodal Ninja has precise click stops to speed up rotation at each interval. M1 has precise 7.5 deg positive stops in upper rotator. All these make shooting and stitching much easier.
Nodal Ninja is developing the M2 which supports even finer intervals. Most parts from M1 can be used on M2.

Thanks for that Nick, i have been admiring the M1 for a while, very elegant design and have taken notice of the click function of the base maybe not a deal breaker but a defintely usable feature, the thing is that i am not sure of the M1's ability to deal with very long lenses, cheers

The continuing development of product is of real interest to me, this M2 you mention, is there anyway of getting some info on its features, having product that is evolving and expanding in useful features is a key part of the decision as to which team i invest in.

I would take Nick's advice about rotators with click stops very seriously. It baffles me why RRS continues to offer their panorama equipment without a click stop rotator. They make very nice stuff, but the lack of a click stop rotator almost disqualifies them from serious consideration, especially if you are considering multi row panoramas. There are so many things to keep track of when doing panoramas; manual setting, white balance, film speed, turn off auto focus, quality, etc., the last thing you need is to try to remember what degree setting to shoot. Really a pisser when you sit down to stitch your panorama from some remote place and you realize you missed a shot!

if you are not using 300mm/400mm F2.8 or the 500mm F4 or the bigger lens, the NN M1/M2 will support it easily.
for the importance of precise click stop rotators, see the opinion from the pro.
