Best Nikon DX compatible fisheye for low-light shooting?

I’m looking for a better performer in low light than my Samyang 8mm at f/3.8. I’ve done a series of f/3.8 focus tests using the Samyang on my Nikon D7000 and always get images that are quite soft compared to f/8.
Is the Nikon 10.5mm lens sharp at f/2.8?
Advice appreciated.

Thank you, Hans. It’s very useful to see these examples.
Aside from softness, the other issue I have with the Samyang 8mm wide open is refraction along the margins of light-dark areas. I don’t see any of that in your panoramas.

Judy,
A sharp picture at f2.8 may not have enough depth of field. After much testing, I use f5 on my 10.5. That may not be light sensitive enough for your needs.
An alternative is to purchase a D3s for about $4000. It is supposed to be the king of Nikon low light shooting. The D4 has not started shipping yet, so we have no real life examples. Who says throwing money at a problem will not solve it?

With proper focusing at 2 meters you have DOF from 1.2 m to infinity at 2.8. Just check the large Superkidspano.

The photographer to the left of me is just around 1 meters away.

Hans, not sure you are aware but you can provide an .xml for krpano for those who cannot see the .mov. I, for example, not having QuickTime installed in my PC.
this is the syntax for krpano's xmls files to display this .mov in krpano (you may need to add the path before the .mov)

Jaime, thanks for the info and example. It’s good to know you have both the Samyang 8mm and Nikon 10.5mm and can personally compare them.

Dennis, I’ll bear in mind the depth-of-field differences. It won’t be an issue for night sky photography.
For close subject matter like vehicle interiors or mushrooms on the shaded forest floor, it could take some careful focusing. A softer background might even be welcome in those situations.

Thanks, Hans for the additional links. I’m very impressed by your Superkids panos. I like the clarity of the small lights and lack of refraction in the aisle-number lights.
In the Photozone sample for Nikon 10.5 at f/11, with the sun in the frame behind a thin cloud, I’m surprised to see no lens flare. Is that typical for the Nikon 10.5mm?

Ah, now I remember the thread ... I did search for it before but couldn’t remember the topic. You already gave me your advice, as did others.

Well, I have a better camera and now need to make the right decision on the lens.
It’s really regrettable that my mind-like-a-steel-trap memory of former years seems to be getting a bit rusty in spots.
