Samyang 8mm on EOS

Hi guys, I've got my Samyang 8mm on hand, my pano head is yet to arrive. Some quick queries about setting up this lens with my 50D- This is the first time I am laying my hands on a fisheye lens & find it difficult to find if I am focussed or not. Also there seems to be no focus confirmation to help me out. Can someone using this lens suggest what focussing distance they generally set(find 1.5 m kind of ok). Also I found some AF confirmation chips from Peleng, do these chips actually work? I was reading some threads here about people using Samyang 8mm on NEX, my wife's got an NEX-5n, I was wondering if I can use this new Samyang 8mm with a Fotodiox adapter(yet to buy). Does the lens register with NEX-5n? Has anyone found a wired remote for the 5n or some app which can control the NEX from a tablet thru usb? Searched a lot of stores & forums but found no suitable wired remote for the NEX-5n, any luck? Regards, 'PanoNoob' Patel

Hi Patel,
The Samyang 8mm like any fisheye will not show much difference with focus through the range that is discernable via the LCD. You need to shoot a series of images at small intervals and compare the differences. Printing a line of "i" text (iiiiiiiiiiiiiii) and trimming, then taping to the lens will give you a 1mm guide and something to count.
You should have something close and something far, to test for the best focus position. Stacking the shots as layers in Photoshop and labeling them will help you make the decision of best. Once found "tape" to position and leave it alone.
You certainly can use the Samyang 8mm Fisheye on the Sony NEX 5N with adapter and it works very well. With the NEX 5N you have an option in the menu called "focus peaking" to help with focus. It is a terrific feature and works extremely well. I posted an example of a Sony NEX 5 and Samyang 8mm some time ago. Here is the link again. www.omnipix.net/temp/nex/

Hi Smooth, Infact it was your thread about NEX-5 that made me think(saw your link & was really surprised by the quality NEX delivers), I guess I can keep my 50D for my regular clicks & use my 5N with Samyang for panos. I just got my Samyang 8mm on hand, was wondering if i can return it for an NEX mount(& ofcourse buy my wife a new cam ) Will explore the Focus Peaking option. Also are there any cable based remote trigger options(other than the IR remote which I personally hate using)? And is it possible to take bracketed photos using remote on NEX? Thanks again Smooth for that wonderfully long thread, guess its a beginners guide for NEX panography Regards, Noob Patel

Aww that Focus Peaking is a wonderful option you have pointed out Smooth, chked it out just now, its like a 3rd eye and of great help. Guess I need to get accustomed to the perks coming with the newer gadgets rather than being stuck with my EOSes Regards, Noob Patel

I guess you could return the Canon mount for the NEX VG10/20 mount. But, I would use an adapter and get the best of both worlds.
I guess you aware we also have modified and adapted the new Samyang m4/3 7.5mm Fisheye to the NEX series? See this thread www.panoguide.com/forums/tipsntricks/9644/
As for the remote. This is a major Sony mistake. Though you have a few options, you can buy a GentLED trigger for the Sony NEX www.gentles.ltd.uk/gentled/trigger.htm and use this in conjunction with a RF remote like a Phottix or even a simple cable remote. It has a standard mini stereo jack 2.5mm so the Canon Rebel/300/600D range fits straight it. You can also use the self timer or a reflective infrared add-on so you can use the remote from behind the camera. Possibly there are also other options. I'm using the GentLED trigger with Phottix Cleon RF remote.
Bracketing is not an option for RAW in the traditional sense. Unless you manually change the shutter speed. This is also something Sony could have done better with. Seems they think the in camera .jpg HDR is what people wanted. Although it's not useless it's hardly what professional desire.
Good luck with your options and I look forward to seeing your results.

Hi Smooth, Chked out the GentLED website just now, correct me if I got it wrong(kinda not clear reading the user manual). This particular GentLED has an IR emitter which talks to the IR on my NEX & I can connect any standard cable shutter release thru the 2.5mm jack right? In that case where do you generally place the GentLED? Do you fix it to the NEX so that it has a line of sight with the NEX's IR which is on the front? Regards, Noob Patel

Yup, blu-tak, velcro or double sided tape. It can be on an angle, it doesn't need to be head on. You can even make a bracket off the panohead.
Or you could even mount on the lens or adapter.
