Has anyone tried the Pano-Maxx?

I'm an NN3 (original version) user and would like to upgrade.

How is the Pano-Maxx rotator? They claim it is pretty smooth.

Mostly, I'd like my detents to work for all 360* of rotation. My NN3 detents work only about 210* of rotation. It's smooth for about a quarter turn.

There is something wrong with your NN3 then. You should seek help from Nodal Ninja. Particularly post on Nodal Ninja's forum and describe exactly what the problem is.

I'm only taking a wild guess here but your detent plate may be in slightly wrong with one side higher (for some reason) than the other. Try rotating the detent plate 180 degrees (a half turn) and press it down on the locking pins to seat it flat on the lower arm's surface.

NN ofer some ways to upgrade for such cases like the new rotator
store.nodalninja.com/products/Rotator-NN3-MKII.ht...
or if you use a fisheye lens then my recomandation will be
store.nodalninja.com/products/RD4.html
I've made a suggestion in past for a slightly modified RD4 with 12 clickstops, not know if is/will be available.
Then that , say, RD4+ will be usefull also for multi row.

At the end are the excellent
store.nodalninja.com/products/RD8.html
or
store.nodalninja.com/products/RD16.html
Which will suits you in all situations whatever rectiliniar or fisheye lens you're using.

cheers,
Dorin

I feel like I'm walking a fine line here. I've been lurking on this site for years and have learned much from this forum. This forum is why I went for an NN product.

I purchased the NN3 from a Canadian vendor who was a very nice guy but sales, only. When I asked him about the detent issue, he nicely steered me to the main site where my inquiry did not result in a civil response. I will not be purchasing anything else from Nodal Ninja.

I want to learn about other products and move in that direction and I'm not all that sensitive to cost.

I would imagine other items in the NN product line are fine and there is no question the results the NN users in this forum produce out are excellent. I'm not here to trash the company. The point is, I will not be buying any more Nodal Ninja products.

If someone has some experience with Pano-Maxx, or other pano-head ideas, I would appreciate reading about it. Searches on Pano-Maxx here and on Google have not been all that fruitful.

Mostly, I'm looking for something small and portable... like the NN3... lol! It would be nice if it had the capacity to leave the battery grip on. I'm less interested in compensation for the offset tripod mount of the Pentax battery grip (or the Pentax body, for that matter). It's been years since I've taken a multi-row pano. If I wanted that kind of coverage, I'd just shoot with a wider lens.

If you really are anti Nodal Ninja look to www.agnos.com

The MrotatorU might be just what your looking for.
Personally I would upgrade the NN3 rotator as Dorin already mentioned.

How strange. NN has a reputation for exceptional customer service and that has certainly been my experience. I wonder what you could have said to elicit a less than 'civil' response.

It's not going to be small if it has to accommodate a battery grip is it?

So you only wish to shoot single row panos? What lens do you use now? And how many click stops will you need per 360 for your lenses?

Hi Tom,

The original NN3 rotator design is quite limited. The NN3 II is much improved. The advanced rotators, RD4/8/16 are far superior in current market. Since you have NN3, why not invest a little more in the rotator? I am not sure if the Canadian reseller offer money back guarantee. But I will offer this to you.

We have forum for many years. If you have issues that can't be resolved by any reseller, ask a question in the forum so that I know the issue. I will see if it is just a design limitation or a defective product.

Use Panoguide forum link to contact me, I will do my best to get your problem fixed and offer good upgrade pathway.

Nick

Nodal Ninja Developer and Manufacturer.

BTW, don't you think the pano max rotator design look like the original NN3? wink
Also look at its edges.

Thank you.

I like the look of their MrotatorT but I don't see a set of arms that look appropriate to use with a dSLR with a 14mm Samyang lens hanging off the front.

Nick Fan -- who is Nodal Ninja -- just replied to your query -- on a blog that belongs to another company.

You can't get better support than that. Could you imagine Steve Ballmer responding to a query about Microsoft on Apple's forum?
