Fall colors along the Eastern Sierra

Spent the last week with Dave Wyman (www.davewyman.net/) and (cough cough) Ken Rockwell. (Ken is exactly the same in person as he is on his web site, but that is a discussion for another thread.) We went to Yosemite for 4 days and Bridgeport CA for 3. Here is one from the set. This is NOT from Yosemite.

Where about is that? Bridgeport is pretty flat mostly.

What rig is that you are using?

There is not a stained glass window in all of Christendom that can rival the brilliance of yellow aspen leaves against a clean, clear autumn sky.

Dennis, that’s a lovely pano. It captures the essence of aspens.

Blown highlights, a pretty scene but lost opportunity.

Really nothing much more that pretty fall colors.

1 in a thousand, going to have to step it up if you want any kind of congrats.

You can do much better than either Dave or Ken.

June lake area. We stayed in Bridgeport and drove all over the place each day.

I could not get the Samyang 7.5 lens quite figured out before my trip. I do not trust it just yet. I used my good old reliable Sigma 8mm, NEX-5, NN R1, Manfrotto monopod.

Since you precisely understand the meaning of this pano, I have succeeded. That is the best compliment you could give. Thank you.

going to have to step it up if you want any kind of congrats.
... and then you completly miss the point.

You can do much better than either Dave or Ken.
David now gets panos, Ken still does not. If we convert one photographer at a time, we will eventually get there.

Dennis,

Look at your image, are you really satisfied with it?

The highlights on the trees are completely blown, great landscape photography is based on natural transitions and details through out as a basic foundation.

Pretty fall colors is a amateurs use. I know you can do better then that. See if you can bring any detail back in the highlights.

And forget about David or Ken, does not matter.

Robert,

I am satisfied with the image. There is always room for improvement for any panorama any one does. We each decide where to draw the line and move on to the next one.

I have about 200 panoramas I shot during the trip. Eventually I may publish about half of them. The point of the trip was to capture the beautiful Fall colors of the Eastern Sierra, nothing else.

I am not a pro and never will be. I am an amateur and very proud of it. The definition of an amateur is "one who does it for the love of it". I shoot what I like and share the results here. I try not to take this too seriously any more. If you like my work, great. If you do not, well that is ok also. If all you see is a couple blown out areas, you are missing a lot. You failed to notice how over saturated the entire panorama is. That was by design and was done on purpose. You also missed the stitching error along one of the trees.

After spending time with Dave, I respect him and his opinions. He is a very gifted pro and his pictures show it. The results he was able to get out of his "point and shoot" would put most of us here to shame. He lives about 20 minutes from my house. He has expressed interest in panorama photography. Ken is entirely different. I would never put those two in the same league. One is a pleasure to work with and the other, well, let's just say it was an interesting week. I can tell from your comments that you have not spent any time with either of these two. Attend one of Dave's workshops and you will see what I mean.

I seem to have struck one of your nerves with this pano. Isn't that the point of art: to get a response from the viewer?

Dennis,

If you are really happy with it, I'm done commenting as my views really don't matter too.

I was only trying to help smile

Good Luck with the remaining 199.

And I always welcome comments both positive and constructive. I appreciate the help. Maybe I will do better with the next one.

BTW: I kind of doubt I will be posting all 199 remaining. Most will probably get deleted for one reason or another.

It's windy up here. All the pretty yellow leaves are blowing off the trees today.

Me personally -- I just like to see the World through other people's eyes. It's almost like mental telepathy.

Criticism on technical flaws is always handy. Fresh eyes to show flaws that fatigue hides. But aesthetic criticism? I don't want see everybody else doing the same as I would do.

Love that time of year, nature showing off.
It's a pity they all drop so quickly.

Great pano Dennis, enjoyed the view.

You must fill me in on the Rockwell experience, my eyes glaze over at the thought of it. 7 days you say... laugh

Nice colours, I like the pano. Not surprised you have some blown-out highlights where the sun made its way through the dense foliage.
Short of bracketing, I can't see the entire tonal range having been captured with one set of images, so you did well to display the details in the shadows.

Looking forward to the rest of the series.

Gus,

It's called over exposure, much too far to the right. This view could have easily been done with full detail even in the highlights in camera, but it's all overexposed by 1-2 stops.

Digital is just like old slide film, so much better to drop the exposure down to capture the highlights, then deal with the shadows. This could have been a great image, as is, just a pretty picture with blown highlights.

Dennis is happy with that, seems all of the other viewers are too. So enjoy the pretty picture.
