Some construction panos
Posted: 2 Jul 2009 at 8:57 GMT
Few more progress panos of the construction site Im currently working on:
Taken from 3 cranes, handheld, Nikon D200, 10mm FE.
Walked around the outside edge of the crane platform, hence few stitching errors.

It's a recycling power station. Basically, all the rubbish from west london will arrive in barges along the river, loaded onto trucks, which will be dumped inside the large concrete bunker. It will then be incinerated, to produce energy. 73 more planned throughout UK in the next 2 decades. Im currently overseeing the subcontractor erecting the steelwork.
When complete, it will look very similar to the sleek looking bulding in the background, with the curved roof.

The tours have proven very useful for designers and engineers working on the project, but unable to make it to site. For example, our designer's headoffice is in Manchester. I create these tours once a month, which allow them to track progress, and identify issues on site.
I think it's a niche market, only a handful of people in the UK specialise in consruction site panos. And when taking still photos on the same day, some of the charge up to £500 a day!

Gus, for 37 years I worked with the construction managers "US Corps of Engineers" on major construction projects around the world. I have since retired and for the last 11 years have been creating panoramas at 360Texas.com.

Your panorama progress photo's are a very interesting adaptation that serves a useful purpose for off site designers and project managers. You are a very innovated person.

I am also a member of another forum called Fort Worth Architectural Forum. John Robert an Architect, hosts the forum. I hope you do not mind but I took the liberty of copy and pasting your comments and links into our FWA forum.

Gus,

In the fort worth architecture forum, "Prairie Pup" has a couple of questions about your project.

You are welcome to register in the FWA forum, please feel free. Or maybe we can exchange email address for off list information exchange.

A month later and we've made some progress. Tower Crane 3 (TC3) has been removed from site, and a 650t crawler crane (£18m brand new!) has taken its place. It's the huge white crawler crane seen from TC2.

Fantastic quality images and superb idea of adapting 360's to something totally different. A really interesting site seeing it develop each month!

3 Months on:
Handheld, D300, 10.5mm , no zenith and nadir because I struggled to get a good stitch, ran out of time and gave up!
Had to do them from the ground this time, as it was too windy to go up the cranes.

Actually I don't know more about construction panos, but with information, I came to know about it.

Gus,
Yes this is a practical application of immersive panorama, an idea I tried to sell to a firm of architects with only marginal success. What I had in mind was monthly identical position shoots so as to record progress. Unfortunately along came the recession and other things were on their minds.
Coincidentally, just now BBC News are showing a time laps video of a 2012 Olympics site. Same idea but with immersive panorama we lot could do better! laugh

Funny you mention the Olympics site - it's my next project, where I start in January, when I return from holiday in South Africa. If the weather is good this weekend, I might be able to complete a final series for the site I'm on at the moment.
I'll see if I can interest the Olympics body in progress 360°s, it being such a media-hungry construction site!
One advantage I have being involved in the project directly as an engineer, is that I dont have to jump through the safety inductions and security loops - which can be a nightmare for photographers.

Gus,

Something bothers me about the series you did of the recycling/power plant site. Why such limited vertical FOV?

Good luck getting permission to shoot an Olympic site. Let me know if you need an assistant. I still have a hard hat, high visibility vest and crush proof boots left over from my pre-retirement job. laugh
