Sunex 5.6mm fisheye - sample stitch
Posted: 24 Jan 2008 at 9:04 GMT
I stitched this panorama using 3 D200 images kindly supplied by John Law. This is what they look like:

I corrected chromatic aberration and highlight colour fringes in ACR and allowed PTGui Pro to attend to any vignetting and exposure differences. The control point generator was non too keen on speading the control points out to the top of the roof, so several points were added there to assist the optimizer. (The venue is ideal for lens calibration).

Optimizer report: Av. 0.75; Max 1.8.
FOV: 185.8
Equirectangular size: 4620x2310
Tile size for QTVR (Pano2VR): 1470

Finished panorama: www.johnhpanos.com/jl2.htm

Michel Thoby has also used the images for his excellent report at:

Thanx for the sample of what the Sunex fisheye can do.

Your selection of scenes is perfect, as 3 shots with a greater than 180° FOV Circular Lens are always a problem at the Zenith if there are things that need to be lined up. Its always a challenge with my Coolpix 5400/FC-E9 combo.

Do you see this as a potential replacement for those of us using the Coolpix setups that want to keep the number of source photos down to 2 or 3?

Thanx Again

Doug, Yes, it would be one to consider, though considerably more expensive than the FC-E9.

That's goes without saying.

The FC-E9s were only $299 when they were new and you could find them. Now its hard to find them even on eBay.

I'm just leaning towards the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 to use on the Canon XTi I bought this summer.

My thinking is similar to Michael Thoby's review, that if I can't do 2 fisheye stitching with a dSLR like I have been with the Coolpix/FC-E9 combo and have a choice of 3 or 4 shots, the Sigma 8mm is the proven workhorse of virtual photography used on the Internet even if it usually requires 4 shots.

Thanx again

I've been testing the Sunex SuperFishEye for a week now.

Micheal did an excellent work with his review and I agree with his position, even though I don't have his skills and knowledge yet.

Quality is way better than the Coolpix/FC-E9 combo on Canon EOS 350D and 40D, but lens calibration in for stitching is definitely needed when you work with 2 shots.

3 shots stitching is easier.

I'll post some examples sometimes soon.

I know from Sunex that the 2/4 position rotator will be available again shortly, possibly in February.

I'm not too hopefull, but would love to see any samples you've done with just 2 fisheyes from the Sunex

Doug,

May I point you to this lively panorama:
michel.thoby.free.fr/Sunex_SuperFisheye/5770+5771...

A general idea of the 4 source images kindly provided to me by John Law:

From left, the first and third images were stitched and blended with PTGui.

Note: Some retouches on the Nadir was done afterwards on the equirect to cover up the blue device that was used to shoot the 2 pairs of hemispherical images.
