New pano up - hints and tips welcome

Hi All. Been lurking a while a finally got the courage to post! I had a short break in the Isle of Wight (UK) recently and took this one early morning,
www.our360tour.com/fishingcoarse/rookleyparkone.h...
I welcome critique (but be gentle) as i am sure this image could be reduced in file size, and made sharper and clearer in photoshop. (settings help required maybe for PTGui Pano2QTVR to reduce file size) I have shot raw files so any help would be great. (yes the nadir could be better). I see some on here that are really sharp. How can i achieve that? Oh, equipment used, Canon 400D Sigma 8mm F3.5 EX DG Fisheye lens agnos Mrotator TCPshort Panoramic head Levelling Base Manfrotto 055 pro b tripod Hotshoe Level PTGui Pano2QTVR PTviewer scripter (not used much yet) Photoshop
All advice welcome thanks a lot. John Goulding

Hi John,
It's a nice picture, but to me looks a little "soft" - I am not sure whether this is caused by your blending options or lack of sharpening after stitching (probably a combination of the two?). There's also a few visible seams on the decking - noticeable slight changes in lighting and areas of blurring.
How many shots did you take for this panorama?
Regards James.

What is the resolution on the pic? I think its a little low for fullscreen... I guess its not 5000x2500 or 3000x6000pix... I think that is why its feels a little soft...

Ok, thanks both of you. Just checked my settings in my project file in Ptgui to stich and it looks like i stitched for print, ie, at 2828 by 1414. Maybe thats where i am going wrong, doh! (wot settings do you all use with this software for full screen, always max first, then resize later?) I will do another at max size when stitching then alter in Pano2QTVR, and see how it goes then post back. Should that do it? Am working on the other bits but want to get qaulity sorted first, thanks. For fullscreen display, there has to be a balance between the equirectangular size and the size of the .mov file you need. As a guide, if you want a .mov of around 2MB, the equirectangular needs to be 5000x2500 to 6000x3000, i.e. a cubic tile size of 1590 to 1910 (pano width divided by pi), with a Pano2QTVR quality setting of 60-70. Settings needed vary with image content of individual panoramas. If you want higher quality than this produces, then you have to accept larger .mov files.

Thanks all.
Guess what i am after is fullscreen clear nice quality panos! I believe that with some kind soles help I can achieve that with the images i have taken. I guess i need the settings and process from raw, to sharpening, removing ca and v, (though i belive there is little with this lens). I then need help with the stitch settings to produce equi, then sharpen and resize? then pano2qtvr and output. I need the genaral workflow and settings to produce a nice quality fullscreen as these software packages dont seem to have brilliant help etc, so, any takers with workflow or settings that would help me or others, feel free, i would be grateful, many thanks, John Goulding (i wont bother you after that, promise!!)

Well it looks like its 3mb to me. Which if its really just 3000x1500 suggests there is something slightly funny about your settings. They generally suggest you should stitch at max size in ptgui and then resize you photo elsewhere for the best quality.
So yes probably stitch at full size then reduce in your photo software (always irfanview if nothing else) to 5000x2500 add a bit of sharpening and then into pano2qtvr and play with the compression settings till you get a size between 1-2mb and see how it looks. Maybe.
Still looks like a fairly nice pano anyway. Reasonably done to my eyes. There may be stitching errors but not so I noticed on a casual examination.

Thank you.
Yep, will play further at the weekend as something not quite right. Looks a little soft and maybe out of focus. It looks like it could do with sharpening but in Photoshop it looks pretty sharp and clear so somewhere i am losing quality. Thanks, yes i think it looks ok, but just ok. A little hit and miss my end with the settings at the moment so will try again soon, see what i can get, again, thanks to all for your help. John Goulding.

Removing CA in ACR is simple - just use your eyes. Pick an image with some detail like sharp edges across a corner that show the familiar red and green edges when you zoom in. Move the top slider to the left to correct it. If there are any traces of yellow and blue edges remaining, move the bottom slider to the right. I find that the settings -25 (top) and +10 (bottom) work well for my 10.5mm images and I apply it to all of them as a matter of course. I suggest you do the same.

Hello there.
I noticed something strange with Pano2QTVR, when creating the panos: my tours are never heavier than 2.5Mb, with a very reasonable quality. In Pano2QTVR, i set the quality settings to 85%, to get a quicktime file of about 2.5Mb, but if i leave it to 90% (or more), it is sometimes more than 4Mb, for just 5% of difference in the quality.
In PTGui, I generate equirectangular pictures of 8200*4100 pixels.
Regards, Alexandre

Hi John H.,
Do you do this fix to remove the CA for your images done with your Sigma 8 as well? Which values do you use then? Is it possible to do this in Photoshop too (If the image is not a RAW)?
Thanks, Mahmood

Mahmood, I remove CA (if present) from all images processed in ACR. For the Sigma 8mm f/3.5 I use settings of -30 (upper slider) and +20 (lower). There is a CA correction feature in Photoshop for ordinary images under Filter->Distort->Lens correction, but it doesn't work nearly as well as doing it in ACR.

Mahmood,
Yes, it is now possible to remove CA with the latest Adobe Camera Raw ( e.g. ACR 4 .1 that comes with PS CS3) when the image isn't in raw format, that is to say "Ordinary image" to quote John. No need to use the poor performer Photoshop internal filter anymore.
From the Main Menu: "Open" the image (tif, jpg, etc...) and then select Camera Raw in the dialog window (Format) drop down menu before hitting "OK".
