Search on date, please....

search is still at random, not at date.
It would help a lot of people and less useless traffic.

Hi James,
at www.panoguide.com/forums/qna/7059/ Smooth asked for info about the use of a Seitz drive on a pole.
I know (because I have one) there are many posts about this Seitz on this nice site.
When I did a search on Seitz+Pole I got Smooth' own new post on page 3 or 4.
Again I would ask if there can be a better way to find old postings on this forum.

With the right search criteria in Google, you can find almost anything you like:

Even if the forums searchengine was optimized, it would never be as good as Google (for as long as google has access to crawl the site... and for as long as people know how to get the most out of it).

Nice idea, the google search, Trausti 
but will newbees asking about lens this and that do that ?
I guess not..
They fill in some words in the panoguide search window and click enter.
And then you get a mess.
Even your google tip is not sorted on date, but I agree most info
can be found

Sorted by date... no, but you can make the searches date sensitive:
"Seitz" "Pole" "Sep" "2009" site:panoguide.com
"Seitz" "Pole" "Oct" "2008" site:panoguide.com
"Seitz" "Pole" "Nov" "2007" site:panoguide.com
"Seitz" "Pole" "Dec" "2006" site:panoguide.com
Throw any of these into Google, and you will get results that will be more or less accurate for these dates. Don't expect 100% accuracy, but this will bring you very close results.
Here you find the results:

Unfortunately, most people only know their search engines well enough to throw in a couple of words or phrases, and hope for something useful.
If you want to find something specific... let's try something that is out of the normal range... a military file that is placed outside it's secure servers and which has been picked up by google crawlers:
For Official Use Only (FOUO) files should not be in public domain... so let's find some:
"For official use only for official use only"
I will search for FOUO twice in a row, which would be typical for military files with headers and footers stamped with FOUO. Rather than searching for it only once, which would appear in many many more documents that may ... or may not be FOUO documents.
Then I want to limit the search to only include military domains:
site:mil
And I am only interested in the most commonly used format in the military PDF:
ext:pdf
and I do not want documents that have no restrictions:
-"approved for public release"
and run the test search:
"For official use only for official use only" ext:pdf site:mil -"approved for public release"

And viola! Already some documents available in a good filtered way, bringing desired results. This could be narrowed down to include only documents from this year or this month... but with this narrow a search, you would have to broaden the search to give any result for a narrow search as it would be for this month only.
So everything you "want" to find with Google, you can find with it... but you have to know what to feed the program with.... even the "tabu" documents of military grade are ripe for picking if you know how to search.
I hope this can help you and others to do better searches both here in the forums, and elsewhere on the net.
