Open link in new window.

Hi there Perhaps you could consider setting the forum in such way that links within posts get open in new window rather than current window. I often find myself following some link posted in the reply, and while on the newly open site, I click some more links, getting sidetracked from the forum. Naturally when done reading, close the window totally forgetting I would like to go back to the thread and read the follow up from other users. Sometimes I end up whacking the back button a lots of time or digging history to find the post instead of searching for it all over again. It's not major issue and the forum works just fine, but I think it just make more sense.
regards
Sebastian

you know it just doesn't work right on the mac and i gave up being dissatisfied with it. i think target=_blank might just be the simple solution, but it's up to james really.

I agree that it should go back to the way it was with links in posts opening in a new window. I forget and either close the browser or find the link so interesting that it is easier just to start over again from the Panoguide home page than click the back-button several times.

On a Mac you can still open links in new tabs or Windows. In Safari, go to Safari->Preferences to see how. By default Apple-click opens in a new tab. Firefox works the same way as on a PC, in other words shift-click = new window and command-click = new tab.
Adding target=_blank means that the link always tries to open in a new window. Removing this means that you are in control not me, and you can choose whether to open links in new windows, tabs or not bother at all.
Personally I hate it when a website creates lots of popups. This way you choose so you are in control. It's just a key on the keyboard.

james, apple click still and always has opened the link in a new tab but it ALSO navigates your current window to that same link!

Hi Michael,
I've managed to borrow a Mac today in order to test Safari and Firefox on a Mac. Using the Apple and shift keys *does* allow you to open links in a new window or new tab (precisely which keys varies depending on your web browser). Note in Safari you can open in a new link or window and switch to the new tab/window or you can open the link "behind" the current window or tab. Check Safari->Preferences->tabs for your shortcut keys.
If there are particular links in panoguide that you notice are not behaving as you expect please let me know.
Regards James.

james, i have no problems opening links in tabs or windows here. it's the fact that the list of threads you are looking at ALSO navigates to that same link that you just clicked on. what i said above applies still in safari, firefox, opera, camino, and omniweb and i've done nothing to change the default behavior of any of these browsers. the default behavior on all mac browsers is that command-click opens a new tab. adding shift makes no change to that behavior, it still navigates your current tab to the same page as the new tab thus you lose the list of threads you were trying to look at.

Hi Michael,
I tested what you described yesterday on a Mac and I could not get firefox or Safari to behave the way you describe. Using the appropriate keys caused the link to be opened in a new tab (and ONLY in a new tab) or in a new window (ditto) and without changing the current tab/window.
I will revisit this again tomorrow hopefully to do more tests. In the meantime I'd appreciate comments from other Mac users on this as I have not been able to reproduce this problem.
Thanks James

hi james -
i am using OS X 1.5.5, safari 3.1.2, & am seeing the same thing, command (apple key) clicking on a link brings current tab to that link, & creates new tab w/ that link - it was happening w/ prev version as well
strange thing is, it does not always happen, but prob about 90% of the time when trying to open individual forum messages from a given forums main page
this is a very common way for me to navigate the web, and i have not seen this behavior on any other page, no other forums, etc -
let me know if i can be of further assistance getting this sorted, and many thanks for the great forums -
sam

On a PC, press and hold down the shift key when you click on a link. A new instance of Internet Explorer will open and launch the link.

Hi, If you have Windows and using Firefox or IE7, instead of normal left click use the scroll (middle button) click. It will open a new tab. Eugen.

Hi folks,
Just like many other forum members I like to see that an embedded URL in a posting opens a new window for the content of the link.
That way when a visitor clicks on the link and later close the new window the visitor is back at the posting. I am pretty sure it is possible to set the forum software to act like this by default...
Anyway, with a piece of HTML code < target="_blank" > a link can be set to open always a new window.
I don't have any experience with the code options of this forum and I don't think it is wise to experiment with it so perhaps the forum master can explain me how to use the html code < target="_blank" > in a posting.
Thanks a lot for your help and all the best,
Wim

I can not see why this is a problem. Everyone should know how to open any link in a new window, It's juts basic web knowledge using right click/open new window. (Mac ctrl click)
