Do you want a new forum?

Hi everyone,
I've been (slowly!) planning and working on changing the panoguide forum from its current form into a more conventional phpBB style forum (using jforum as it happens).
Out of interest, do you like the current very simple no-frills panoguide forum, or do you prefer forums with avatars, private messages, polls/votes etc etc?
Feel free to reply here or contact me directly with your thoughts, comments, etc.
Thanks James.

James,
I would be happy to transfer the original PanoTools wiki to you as the new caretaker. If you are thinking of using a standard PHP based forum I would go with Simple Machines. It's a much nicer forum package then phpBB.

BTW: I just went to the jforum site and it was off line.
I would give up on anything Java based. Haven't you gone through enough pain already keeping this monster going?

Hi John,
The Simple Machines forum looks interesting. Yes, jforum is offline from here too but yes, panoguide is 100% Java and I envisage keeping it that way because that is what I am most comfortable coding in, and because it will be much easier to integrate a Java forum into a Java website etc. Panoguide is pretty stable now and has been for months as far as I know (and my site monitoring tells me).
Regards James

James,
Well that kills the wiki idea. (php based) Lets hope you stay healthy because finding someone to maintain your creation will be difficult.
Good luck with whatever direction you go.

Not necessarily! There are java wikis and it's not that hard to integrate a php wiki. The panoguide store is php. I'd need a little time to set it up though - I'll drop you an email later and let's chat offline.

Good thing too. We only need one Pano Tools wiki. Two is confusing and the duplication of work is pointless. Transfer any useful updates from the defunct wiki to wiki.panotools.org/ .

Back to my original question... forums?
I'd really appreciate comments on whether a conventional forum like jforum, phpBB etc is a good idea or not - i.e. do you like the fact panoguide currently has a "no frills" forum, or do you miss having avatars, polls, etc?

You've got a winner, no need to change it
Keep it simple like it is now
The only thing that would be helpful would be the ability to host smaller sample images on the Forum instead of just links to photos.
Not all of us have the ability to host images ourselves and this is a site about photography. So if more of us could show what we're talking about, it would make the Forums even more valuable.

Keep it simple, no need for fancy gimmicks. It's great as it is.

I like it the way it is, in fact I think its one of the best forums I visit, super fast, but I do agree with Doug... and I am also willing to "donate" web space to host images for the forum...I have a hosting account with plenty of space, just let me know if its a good idea. I can probably code a simple image hosting script and use it for this forum.
