why close a thread ?

if not for moderation I see no good reason to expire an old thread, when you've done your search, read it and are ready to add sth to it and are obliged to post anew, it dilutes content, and serves not interest of users, very disappointing imho.

Currently if a thread has not been active for 60 days, it closes and no further replies are permitted. The assumption is that if there have been no replies for 60 days, the conversation has finished and any future discussion on the same subject is a new conversation.

I welcome suggestions whether this time limit is too short (or indeed too long? - no, I didn't think so). However I think this is useful to prevent a really old thread suddenly jumping to the top of the activity list. Also very long threads tend to go off topic - allowing people to reply to a thread months (or even years) after they first started makes this more likely to happen.

btw, if a thread has not received any replies it stays open.

Regards
James.
