Maybe a bug?
Posted: 24 Apr 2007 at 13:15 GMT
I discovered that after I browse on panoguide.com no more images sows then after on other sites and on panoguide itself, the browser shows some infinite downloading picture... until I close and restart IE (I'm using IE 6.0)
I checked on two computers same behavior (even with refresh of system ghost archive from half year ago so isn't locally)
I think all started couple of days ago when I noticed some blank gray instead of gallery banners and no more emoticons and google adds

Update

I have images in FireFox on panoguide.com but in IE after first browse in this site no more images even if I open from HDD a .jpeg unless I close IE and browse to other site. I'm browsing on internet since '97 and I never encountered something like this.

Anyone else has this problem? I could use FF for browsing on panoguide it's a bit slow for my taste but has a spell check which is very helpful for me wink

I am not seeing anything wrong when viewing this site at all. Have you cleared out your cache? It sounds like IE is getting gunged up. There is a good and free program you can use to clean out old files like this from: www.ccleaner.com/ You could also try to upgrade IE to the latest version: www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/d...

Good luck!

Sorry for being quiet about this - yes there is a bug with the banner image on the site which I am trying to track down. It should not affect any other aspect of the site, but you may occasionally get a blank space where the image should be at the top of the page.

This in no way should affect any other website and if it does I reckon its a bug in Internet Explorer.

Yes all start with banner image, somehow IE begin some infinite download of banner image or thumbnail of latest panoramas in gallery, for example with IE 6.0 the thumbnail of Paris-on motorbike panorama by Eric never appear, other times it happen (infinite download) on some logor.gif.
I checked on three PCs now all with Win2000 and IE 6.0 maybe is a bug in IE but only from three days is that, so must be some latest changes in website reveal that bug. After first show on some of the images from any pages from panoguide.com IE seems to cancel to show any images even from HDD never cached..is very strange.
If I close IE and browse on other sites everything is ok until browse again on panoguide, then show some images from panoguide (any page) then no more images even on about
from Help menu on IE the logo of IE doesn't appear (I guess that because is a little webpage that)

info: after right-click on invisible images the properties said at size "-1 bytes"

Hey Doring!!

No bugs Here, did U clear all the temporary internet files form IE and windows? Type %temp% from the run command line. Then clear all trash. Then delete al files from...

"C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files"

Now run a full scandisk then defrag. Chek out your firewall software too.

You can upgrade to IE7 or give a try to Opera v9.2 is the fastest browser and can delete all cache contents when you close the browser.

Preferences window of opera:

chek the “empty on exit” box

I hope this can help!

Good luck

Hi Henning, thanks for suggestion but I do not ring until I eliminate other local causes wink

James, could you please make a simple test, change the thumbnail of great panorama of Eric "from Paris on motorbike" with other file with same graphic content, or simply remove the "-" sign from file name.
I investigate.. is the only file which has -1 in size in IE after IE 6.0 encounter that file it shows no pictures further on. I'll explain further if this test have success

Hi Dorin,

I've tracked down the problem image, something had gone wrong in the database when Klaus uploaded Viewpoint "Hafencity" which I have fixed.

I have thoroughly checked the server logs, and there are no other errors being reported in the main site.

Because of the way the site dynamically generates and caches images, I cannot simply temporarily change Eric's image thumbnail. Obviously things can go wrong, however if there was something specific wrong with Eric's image or the way the site resizes it on-the-fly, everyone should see it. Try viewing the image directly as follows, and force a browser refresh (CTRL-F5 or click refresh while holding CTRL and Shift keys, assuming you are on Windows that is):

Hi James
My IE 60 cancel to show images when it encounter this

http://www.panoguide.com/gallery-images/241-th.jpeg;jsessionid=5019B407F423495A0E0445ED5F7AE1AA?s=thumbnail

So I thought that if you can change the name from 241-th.jpg in, say, 241_th.jpg might help

Now panoguide.com works again with images on my end,

Due to the fact that last three thumbnail's name in galery doesn't contain "-" char everything is now ok.

Sorry James if I bothered you, you do great job with this site, but there is something with "-" sign in the name of thumbnails otherwise I don't explain how on 3 PCs relatively independent but with same IE 60 and Win 2000 was that odd failure, could be IE bug.

keep the good work
