Just randomly stumbled upon this looking at printers www.thepanoawards.com I think the entry fee is a bit steep but might be fun. Cool that ptgui is a sponsor, surprised no one gave us the heads up.
Have fun Dylan

I did some research on this when I got the invitation a month ago.
The first that surprised me was the name Epson international award. Epson international has nothing to do with this. They claim that Epson australia is sponsor but on Epson.au there is not a single mention about it. And not at any of the other "sponsors" as well. Would be nice to hear what Matt has to say about it.
After looking in the whois I found that they are connected to this www.internationalapertureawards.com/
Another of this suspect competitons which is only arranged to get money from photographers entry fees. In reality what they show on the page has nothing to do with panoramas or panoramic images and the rules just say that the proportions should be;
ll images must be panoramic format, defined for this competition as a minimum 2:1 ratio (long side hort side). Images may be cropped to fit the minimum ratio.

Checking a little more and found that David Evans owns the domain. Whois did not provide the info so I checked my Danish domain lookup.
He seems to be a well known Au photographer and he has Epson Australia as sponsor. Also is the No 1 judge.

I also got this Epson contest spam. Does anyone know which ^$#%% forum sold its member list so I can let them know, in a very friendly way of course, what I think of this kind of practices?

I didn't get it, and I am a subscriber to the PTGui forum, but NOT 360P. Does that narrow it down a bit?
Cheers!

I don't remember ever signing for the ptgui or 360P forum. Might be possible though.. And even if I did, it sure doesn't mean that they can forward my mail address to this kind of spammers.

I got it plus a reminder in duplicate. About 18 months ago I purchased an Epson printer from PC World (UK) and registered it. Both PC World and Epson have my e-mail address. i.e. it is in their databases. But then my address is in loads of other photography related databases too, any one of which might or might not be the culprit.

Hans,
I think your comments about the Epson International Pano Awards are unfair. For a start, Epson does mention this competition, although only briefly: www.epson.com.au/prographics/news/tradeshows/
Although the definition of what constitutes a panoramic image is very broad, a 2:1 ratio is exactly what you get with a spherical equirectangular image. And the example images shown on the competition website *are* panoramic images but obviously are not anything close to 360 degree panoramic images. "Panoramic" has a much broader meaning than just real-estate style ~360 degree images. If the competition stipulated a minimum field of view (e.g. minimum 100 degrees in either direction) it would be practically impossible for competition organisers to validate this.
Since it appears the main sponsor is a company primarily associated with printing, I would expect that the likely majority of competition entries will not be 360 degree images, as these tend not to work as well when printed flat.
Regards James.

The judges are also only from a panoramic print background not what we generally here call panoramas I.E: 360x180.
This is yet another reason we should separate what we do 360x180 and call them Omnipix, Omniviews or even Omni Panoramas (Omnipans). With Omni meaning "All, Everywhere".

Just trim off the top and bottom of your panorama. Take out the parts that are distorted. That will make for a boring picture, but at least it will stand a chance with the judges.

if you look at this list of news www.epson.com.au/prographics/news/pressrelease/ You have a sponsored Epson photo contest as the first but there is no Pano Photo Award in the list. That does not look like they are real sponsors.
Regarding using panoramas or panoramic as definition for any wide angle or tele images with a wide proportion cropped or made in camera I think it is a bad thing which confuses to much. Then you can just as well put any images in same category wether they are single normal images 360 degree or what ever.
What about the mosaics the way Max Lyon and others do it. Most of what they do does not fit into the 2:1 ratio and they are also in most cases not allowed in other competitions as they do compositions that most normal photo contests do not allow.
