What information do we collect?
We collect two kinds of information about our users:
- non-personal information such as the IP address (the location of your computer on the Internet), pages requested, information about what web browsers our users are using and what kinds of computers. All this information helps us to identify what parts of the site are most popular, ways of improving the layout and design of the site to best meet our users' reading habits and their choice of computer and web browser etc.
- personal information such as your name, email address, country, location and timezone. Some or all of this information may be gathered if you register on panoguide or if you contact us using the contact form or by email. None of this information is gathered automatically - it is only gathered if you supply it to us.
What happens to the collected information?
If you contact us through the website, the personal information you supply is used only to send an email to us and a courtesy copy to you. When we receive your message we will keep that message so that if you contact us again we can collate the messages and provide you with a better service.
If you register on panoguide, all personal information you supply is stored on the server. We do not currently offer secure encrypted communication for submitting and retrieving personal information stored on the server, however the only mandatory personal information for registration is your name, email address and timezone. All other personal information you supply is at your discretion and in addition you may choose whether to conceal your email address and/or real name from other users on the website.
How is personal information used?
If you register on panoguide, your personal information is used to allow you to identify yourself so that you can take part in the forums and submit your own product reviews, and to create a personal profile homepage for you. You do not need to register on panoguide to read the information on the site - registering on the site simply allows you to take part and add your opinions, upload your panoramic images, ask questions and discuss topics of interest to you with other users.
The timezone you specify is used to ensure that all dates and times in the site are shown in your local time. Unregistered and logged-out users see all dates and times as if they are in GMT (GMT +0:00).
We use registered users' personal information to maintain their accounts and we may from time to time contact registered users specifically about their registration, such as to provide password reminders, tell a user that his/her account has expired etc.
We may also send information to registered users about panoguide's other products and services, or about third parties' products and services, unless the registered user has indicated his/her preference that we do not do this. A registered user may at any time view and change his/her choice of whether to accept communication from panoguide or selected third parties about other products and services. (To do this, use the "my account" link at the top of the page after you log-in, and then use follow the link on the right of the page to "privacy settings". If for any reason you are unable or unwilling to log-in, please contact us or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org and we will change your privacy settings for you.)
In addition, we may disclose information about you, including personal information, to third parties in order to comply with the law. panoguide will co-operate with the police, regulatory and government bodies to assist in their investigation of illegal activities, and this may include disclosure of personal information. Furthermore, panoguide reserves the right to disclose your personal information to a third party where a complaint arises regarding your use of the website and that use is deemed by panoguide, in its sole discretion, to be inconsistent with the Terms and Conditions.
Is the information secure?
Personal information sent through the website is not encrypted and is stored on the server in a database. Only registered user's passwords are "hard" encrypted, which is why if you forget your password we generate a new password for you rather than remind you of your existing one.
Does panoguide collect information about children?
It is a condition of becoming a registered user of panoguide that you are aged 18 or over. We do not knowingly accept user registrations from children (people under the age of 18) and we will block accounts if we become aware, or suspect, that an account is being used by a child.
panoguide uses two types of cookies:
- Session cookies to faciliate log-in for registered users. If a registered user stops accepting cookies, (s)he will no longer be able to log-in to panoguide. Session cookies last only as long as you are using your web browser on your computer. If you quit your web browser or switch off or restart your computer, any session cookie should be deleted by your web browser. The session cookie contains a unique string that is used to identify you during your visit - but it does not contain any personal information about you.
- Permanent cookies are used to remember pagination preferences for viewing forums (threads and messages) and viewing product reviews. They are also used for the "remember me" functionality that registered users can choose to use. In this case we also create a permanent cookie on your computer that contains a seemingly unintelligible string of characters and numbers. This string contains your email address and password encrypted several times over. We can use this to allow you to log-in to panoguide whenever you visit without having to ask you to type in your email address or password. The cookie is tied to your computer and cannot easily be copied in order to be used by someone else. If you are using the "remember me" feature and you want to stop using it, simply use the logout link at the top of every page - doing this will delete the permament cookie, and will mean that you will have to log-in manually on your next visit.
